Quote :
"Fox to stick with struggling Delhomme at quarterback

November 27, 2006

Jake Delhomme is getting too much of the blame for Carolina's offensive woes and will remain the starter, coach John Fox said Monday.

"When you drop back to pass the ball it's a team effort," Fox said a day after the Panthers mustered only 264 yards in a 17-13 loss to Washington, which has the 30th-ranked defense. "Whenever you don't play well enough to win I'm not sure it's one guy. It's definitely not just Jake."

Delhomme was 23-of-38 for 168 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Redskins. His second pick was costly. On first down from the Washington 41, Delhomme was pressured and his badly overthrown pass for Steve Smith into double coverage was caught by Washington safety Sean Taylor with 2:09 left.

"I got hit and it obviously didn't go where I thought it was going to go," Delhomme said. "But they were playing coverage to him all day long, maybe once or twice they didn't. He was running and I was trying to throw it down the seam. I didn't anticipate it to go there. But I was giving him a chance on that play.

"That's why that (throw) looked like a kickoff."

The loss against the downtrodden Redskins dropped the Panthers (6-5) a game behind New Orleans in the NFC South and continued a maddening inconsistent season.

Delhomme has 12 touchdown passes, nine interceptions and a passer rating of only 78.7. But Fox said that, barring injury, he'll remain the starter ahead of Chris Weinke.

"I think he's proven he's the right guy," Fox said. "Until he proves otherwise, we'll stay the same. I can't sit here and predict the future, but I don't want to give any inclinations that we're thinking about changing the quarterback.""

hmmm...is this a classic "we stand behind him" thing, then they bench his ass?

I bet they take a serious look into a QB, come draft time.

They should have been taking a serious look the last couple of years. He's always been what's holding the team back. Some years more than others.

is LaFors still on the team? he's played well in the past, however this was not the case in preseason. still, i think he's a better choice than delhomme right now and definitely better than stinky weinke

actually, i wouldn't mind fox starting weinke next monday against philly. without mcnabb they shouldn't be much of a threat and it would give coach fox a chance to try him out for a little bit. we need a QB who doesn't throw crucial interceptions because we can't rely on our run game to bail us out every week.

The Panthers have nobody on the team who is anywhere near the QB Delhomme is.

I'm not saying Delhomme is good, but he is better than our other players.

This is something to bring back up in the off season, if he struggles the rest of the way.

i will have a lot of respect for Fox if he can bench delhomme w/o it requiring him to be knocked out, like vs. Detroit last year

well, who's going to be available at the end of the season?

is there anyone in college football worth trading up for and training? Quinn? Smith?

problem for the panthers is that they are too consistent in the reg. season to get a high enough draft pick to get a top-flight qb; the panthers keep getting basanez, lafors, and players like that in the later rounds that are usually long shots with the occasional good player turning out (see Tom Brady)

and the problem with trading up to get a great college qb is that sometimes even the highest qb's drafted never "get it" at the NFL level (see Ryan Leaf). it would be hard for the franchise to tell themselves to jump way up, give away tons of draft picks to get there and maybe even a couple of good players that are already proven, and get a good college qb that you still don't know will pan out when you already have a serviceable, but not great, qb already playing for you.

Panthers need to draft a QB in the first round, and get Bret Favre for the last year of his career.

Neither, his name is Brian Brohm and this kid is going to be the real deal. I would take him over both Smith and Quinn.

For everyone who thinks Delhomme should be benched for Weinke:

Do you have any idea how much more success Jake has had as a starter?

Weinke's season as a starter: 1-15 record
Jake's ~3.5 seasons as a starter: 2 NFC Title games, 1 Superbowl appearance, a current > .500 record

No way we bench Delhomme this year, that would just be dumb as shit...

Simms over Delhomme...NEVA

Quinn, Smith, & Brohm will all be good QB's in the League, but I think Quinn will have quicker success

Matt Shaub is a restricted free agent, I think ATL will keep him.

But I would like to give him a tryout.

I would Take schuab no doubt, but ATL has to keep him. This may be the last year for Vick to start in ATL if he does not figure a way of winning some of these remaining games. I am thinking he has to at least go .500 with the remaining games.

And no way would I want Vick....

No way they bench Delhomme this year. He wont even lose his starting job for the beginning of next year unless the panthers practically lose out. We have no QB on the bench that the organization will risk the rest of the season to help his learning curve (i.e. J. Cutler in Denver) and we wont get a good enough QB in the draft to start next season. Trading for or picking up a QB from FA is really the only way he will lose his job. You put Basanez in there this year and he gets his legs broken behind that terrrible O-line.

Oh and Jake Plummer may be on the market at the end of the year with aaron brooks, drew bledsoe, and more shameful options that wont oust jake from his job....

Im sure some idiot will want Kerry Collins back too....

Hell yeah, Treezy.

We dont need a Manning type QB, Jake is all we need (and hes cheap!).
All we need is a healthy O-line and a Stephen Davis clone.

You people are missing the point....O-LINE!!!!! If Jake is pressured in the pocket, yeah he's been bad. If they can releive some of the pressure, he's a top ten QB. If they can't get that Oline working, they need a QB that can scramble some, i.e. Troy Smith, or maybe trade for someone who can.

This is also why the "run oriented" offense looks like shit. You can't run without and Oline.

and OL.... with a better OL the backs will do much better, a better QB will do MUCH better, and thus the offense flourishes.... defensively, avoid injuries, pump secondary some, get some up and coming guys for the old warhorses on the line / linebackers

OL - QB - CB/Safety should be the priorities in the draft, with line backers, dl, hb, and wr coming in at low priority

you're right about D.C. but I was at the game and most of the fans there were white and had $$. I mean they were selling $15 hot dogs at that damn place (very impresseive stadium I might add) that I am sure go to that salary they are still paying spurrier. It was very loud in there and I almost puked watching our O-line that day. Maybe we need more black O-linemen?

we are getting a TE and we NEEEEEED a LB to replace Morgan. It doesent look good for his future I'm afriad and that is a very big loss that is very much overlooked. Cooley wouldnt have scored that TD on us if morgan was out there.
