Estranged from his son for many years, Gou-ichi receives an unexpected call from his daughter-in-law, Rie, asking him to come to Tokyo to visit his son, Ken-ichi, who is in the hospital suffering from a stomach ailment. Gou-ichi decides to make the trip against his better judgment, but when he arrives, his son refuses to see him as he is still bearing the scars of the unspoken reasons why they were torn apart. Determined to reunite them, Rie gives Gou-ichi a videotape of an article Ken-ichi wrote about Li Jiamin, a Chinese folk opera master from Yunnan Province. Ken-ichi had promised Li that he would come back and film him performing "Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles," an opera based on one of the stories in the literary classic ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS; Gou-ichi makes it his mission to travel to southern China, find Li, and film the performance himself.

This movie is going to kick ass. It was directed by Zhang Yimou, director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers. This is not a martial arts flick by any means, but he has made some seriously amazing straight-up dramas, too. If you've seen either Hero orHouse of Flying Daggers, you know it's going to be beautiful.

It's got 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.6 on IMDB, so this one should be pretty good. Come see it!

Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles is opening this Friday, December 1st, at Galaxy Cinema in Cary. I'll post the showtimes when I have them.

i wonder how many people will see "from the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers" and then be completely disappointed with the lack of wirework.

ARE YOU SERIOUS WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME OH GOD I WILL BE THERE OPENING DAY JESUS CHRIST

I wish I were kidding. I'm worried about this one, actually- Zhang Yimou's lost all his awesome personal story-ness for these huge epics that are beautiful but lack the same substance of his earlier stuff. So I hope this will be him getting back on his personal relationship horse.

Also, you know this thread should be called (dir. of To Live)

1. That wouldn't fit.
2. People have seen Hero.
3. To Live is more awesome than these people can handle.

omg you are right

Also, it's always the movie I end up watching with other people (well, that and Before Sunrise/Sunset), and I never mind. One of these days, some depressed somebody is going to want to see The Ice Storm instead, and I'm going to laugh.

Wait, so is The Ice Storm more or less depressing than To Live?

And, yeah, I need to see that. Fuckin' movies. They keep making more of them

The Ice Storm is one of the most cynical movies I've seen. Depressing? Hell yes.

The backbone of this movie is a good reason to see it alone

+10 points for taking pictures of kids pooping

And also a weird little jaunt into Japanese for Zhang Yimou, come to think of it. I haven't seen him do anything in Japanese before.

Chinese directors have an unfair advantage. They can pay 50 cents a day for as many actors and extras that they want.

hahahahahahahaha

Yeah, all of Zhang Yimou's cinematographic skill is completely dependent upon cheap extras.
