An old friend of the family recently died and left my father with a 10 yr old female African Grey Parrot. The bird's name is Polly and she came with a large cage. I saw her over Thanksgiving and she looked healthy and likes to mimic (has been known to say words in the past, including cuss words) - no feathers missing or anything like that. We need to find a new home for this bird. My father would like to sell the bird to a good home – About how much do you think she could sell for? Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could find a buyer or if not a parrot rescue?

^^He's not far off, especially since it comes with a big cage. I find it's harder to find an actual buyer than to find out the price though.

What a retarded name though...

yeah oftentimes the cage can cost just as much as the bird.. .
Did the friend of the family get it from a breeder or what? Was it hand raised and weaned? Does it have a band on it's leg?

a reasonable adoption fee for a bird like this would be between $500 - $1500, especially since it comes with a cage. You don't want to ask for too little in case its an impulse buy but if the person interested has other large birds and is experienced then i'd let it go for less since you know its going to a good home.

make sure whoever is adopting the bird knows what they're getting into. they can live to be around 80+yrs old and need to have human interaction and enrichment EVERY DAY or they'll have a very bored and destructive intelligent animal on their hands.

The Avian & Exotic Vet off Creedmore will let you leave info about the bird and they might be able to help you place it. (they have a book at the front full of adoption ads)

A friend of mine has one and I know how she would feel about this. With this type of bird she would rather give it to a loving RESPONSIBLE home than try to make a buck. ^ is right, a bird like this is not only a lot of work, but they live a very long time.

Said friend actually has in their will who the bird will go to and has already worked out with the other party what would happen upon her death.

In my experience they don't live as long as the big Macaws and such. Generally between 50 and 60 years, but that is still a huge commitment. I could never fathom getting a pet like that.

it's not uncommon for those parrots to outlive their owners ... sometimes more than one owner. Cages can easily be $1000. The birds can be anywhere from $1000-$2000. Talk to an avian vet near you - perhaps he/she will know someone or will be willing to let you post an ad.

My mom runs an exotic animal rescue, and she has a lot of experience with large birds, if Polly needs to find a good home she would love to take her in. Let me know if Polly still needs a home!

I know a guy that would take him...he's awesome and teaches kids about the environment with them by going to schools and stuff. http://www.birdmandave.com . At least talk to him...if he can't take him, he'll know someone...
