"BOYS: Dion Malachi, Boiling Spring Crest. He's 6-foot-5, all muscle and the nephew of one of the greatest athletes and N.C. basketball players of all-time, Basketball Hall of Famer David Thompson. "I watched David play in high school and the similarities are scary between the two," Crest football coach Roy Kirby said. Kirby said Dion is being recruited by N.C. State. (Also receiving votes: Adam Hunt, Olympic, who's father, Jerry, played with Thompson in college; Lakeem Jackson, Harding; Nick Trull, Hickory Grove; Dee Bost, Concord)."

yeah I know this is very premature, but interesting to think about. especially since he has obvious ties to NC State.

anybody know anything at all about this kid?

for the record I doubt there will ever be another DT

this kid could have potential and I am glad we are his radar but its gonna take alottttt of genetic miracles to produce another DT.

Havent heard anything on him but sounds like an interesting prospect...id love to hear more.

I have full confidence that there will be another DT, physically. Hell, if Kobe had played college ball, it could have been him.

Now, the game and level of competition have certainly changed, so I wouldn't expect a new DT to necessarily have the same accomplishments.

Sidney can't say jack shit about him in the press. It's against recruiting regulations.

Same High School as DT. I'm from there, I'll ask around home next time I get a chance.

Not like it'll be super-spy material or anything.

I went to Crest and the kid is legit. Kirby (the football coach) knows what he's talking about because we have always had a lot of players that played basketball and football in the same season. The similarities ARE there...the kid was dunking the ball from the FT line as a freshman.

I know nothing about this kid but if he is so good, why does he only average 13.8 pts per game?

Not dunking, unless he wants a technical foul.........regulations were a bitch in the 70s. Oh and even worse, there was no such thing as a 3 point shot.

[Edited on December 4, 2006 at 5:29 PM. Reason : unless you got fouled on a basket of course, old fashioned 3pt play]

which is is why it it is ridiculous to attempt compare stats of the players of that era to today's players but their are idiots out there that will try.

"CREST'S MALACHI ON MCDONALD'S ALL-STAR LIST
Nov. 30, 2006

Crest High senior Dion Malachi (6-6, 190) has been nominated to play in the McDonald’s All-America basketball game.

Malachi turned in a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds in Monday’s opener at Kings Mountain, including a couple of highlight-reel dunks.

He averaged 20 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks in an injury-shortened junior season and posted 290 points as a sophomore.

Malachi, the nephew of Hall of Famer David Thompson, also competes for the Charlotte Aces AAU team.

The final roster for the McDonald’s teams will be announced in early February.

Malachi and his Charger teammates take a 1-0 record into tonight’s non-conference contest at Shelby’s Lloyd Little Gymnasium. The Golden Lions enter the game with a 3-0 mark after Tuesday’s home win over Ashbrook.
"

Sounds like a decent recruit

i like the sound of "highlight reel dunks"

I doubt he is that good and no one has heard of him. Something fishy is going on.

How do you get "nominated" anyway? I thought a group of panel just decided who would play in it.

I went to crest and word on the street from people who have seen him play/know of him say he has the atheletic ability to be great, but is kinda lazy and not the brightest. However I was told he has crazy ups and nasty dunks.

yea his issue is not athletic ability. he is a freak. his problem is lack of discipline. the basketball coach at crest (i went there so i know) is very laid back and not a hard ass.

lowe knows nc state. i doubt he would be recruiting a kid who he doesn't think he could teach to be disciplined. that's what i love about sidney, he wins over his players hearts and he makes them believe that through hard work they can do anything. at least that is the impression i am getting of sidney so far.

the fact that he is nominated for the mcdonalds team doesnt mean a damn thing. the committee nominates 1500 players across the nation.

My question is what class is he in HS? SO, JR, SR? And although I know you can't totally rely on scout.com, why is he not on our list of prospects?
