...would anyone make an effort to go cheer for Navy in Charlotte for Navy's bowl game?

I had no plans of going but if he is our next coach maybe I'll make the effort and cheer for him...Its hard not to like Navy anyway.

How is Jimbo a better pick?

A proven winning head coach vs. a very good assistant?

Why is this a bad thread?

We aren't in a bowl, but our new coach could be.

Id be down with going.

Paul Johnson won't be able to recruit near as well in the south like Jimbo will. Johnson is not near as animated Jimbo. and Navy doesn't even avg 60 passing yards a game.

i have no idea who Paul Johnson is

I have no idea what Butch Davis is

I hear that Paul Johnson has coaching ability

I hear Butch Davis has recruiting ability

Chuck Amato had recruiting ability

Chuck Amato did not have coaching ability

Anyone who bases what this guy does based on talent he can get a Navy seriously needs help.

Let's see. Bobby Ross won 4 ACC Championships and 1 National Championship at GT. How's he done at Army?

Johnson has been named the National Coach of the Year in both DivI-AA and Division 1-A

But yeah, he'd be a horrible pick if we could get Jimbo.

Not ridiculing those that want Jimbo, but to say Jimbo 'is the better pick' is quite ridiculous. I don't know any more than you guys as how Jimbo would be.... but Johnson has been a helluva coach everywhere he's been

Quote :
"Paul Johnson won't be able to recruit near as well in the south like Jimbo will."

Because it's all about recruiting. Urban Meyer wouldn't win at all without all of that talent at Florida

...oh wait

Amato outrecruits Jim Grobe...gee, he showed him

If you want someone who can recruit then why did we just Fire CHuck?

Recruiting is very overrated...take Wake for example...ACC Champs and they have crap talent at almost every position. They are will coached and play as a team so they are a good team.

Paul Johnson can coach...Jimbo can recruit (no one knows if he can coach) We are hiring a head COACH not head recruiter.

^ Our class was not in the top half of the ACC last year. I remember us being behind Duke and Wake in addition to pretty much everyone else at one point. I never saw the final rankings, but I know it wasn't anything to brag about.

to properly end the title of this thread:

"If we hire Paul Johnson"
then we will all support him and realize that he probably is a better coach than Amato regardless of the recruits he pulls in.

It is tough to say no to a HC (who is also a top OC)/ DC combo with Fisher...

I am guessing it is assumed that PJ will bring in his current staff from Navy to NCSU?

the thing about Wake is that Grobe redshirts 99% of the freshman in everyclass
he knew when he got to Wake his record would suffer until he got some tenured players

now that his system has been built up, he should do nothing but reload
he will have a team full of seniors next year also

You can't possibly say that based on anything involving logic.

The man is winning at Navy and we're a million years better in terms of talent and facilities.

I'm pretty sure a man whose had the success Paul Johnson has had wouldn't mind changing his offense to suit his situation.

He's not herb. This man has had HC success.

PJ was an OC at Hawaii and they did (and still do) pass the ball all the time. I'm pretty sure he would have our offense suit the players we have and could recruit.

Yes, PackPride did a good breakdown of PJ's Hawaii OC stats which I obviously won't post here but they were quite impressive.

Trying to be realistic now that Cowher ain't in the mix. We thought big, we tried, and he said NO. Should we go after Bill Parcells now? You keep thinking big now and call up Neinas with your GRAND idea. I'm sure you'll come up with a coach who sends us to the NC next year.

Not really. Butch is a good recruiter and he is a disciplinarian. At Miami, he was well-liked but given the nickname "Botch Davis" for poor in-game and play-calling decisions. He was a great recruiter, but all due respect, he was recruiting from the backyard of the college football recruitment capital. We should be worried that UNC has Davis, but he won't kick ass at UNC.

Right on. Johnson is a brilliant X's and O's coach. Which is what we need.

Quote :

Come on. He was a successful OC for pass-happy Hawaii. Then he runs an option offense at Navy- with players who lack the size and strength of other D-1 schools- AND STILL WINS. He'll coach with the talent he can get. And he'll manage to get decent talent on his squad.

I'll be happy with either coach.. at first I thought PJ had always used a triple-option offense.. and wasn't sure if that style of offense would work in the ACC.. but knowing that he has coached with pass-heavy offenses in the past that he may end up adapting his offense to what will work best with what talent he can get and what works best in the ACC.

Although.. since PJ is known for his triple-option offense, we may have a difficult time recruiting WR and pocket passing QB's... which will hurt us if the option offense doesn't work and we have to make changes in order to win games and don't have the talent needed.
