A couple of weeks ago, much to my surprise, I saw someone wearing pajamas to lift in...so I just assumed they were an oddball. Recenty I have noticed others adopting this practice.
People wearing pajamas to the gym: Who are they? What is their deal? Why do they do it? Aesthetics? Comfort? Performance?
Do any of you people do it? Why? When did you adopt this practice? Do you recall a formative event related to this decision?

I've done it a couple times. Its comfortable, personally when I go to the gym I go there for myself, I don't care what I look like. 12/6/2006 2:23:58 PM |

^they'll throw you out for wearing flops or bluejeans. Flipflops are obviously unsafe, you cant wear open toed footwear. and jeans tear up the equipment. 12/6/2006 2:27:25 PM |

Why? There is a whole area for dumbells. I can't go do heavy squats anywhere. I will usually ask them to move first==as I would like to squat. 12/6/2006 2:34:42 PM |

there are a wide variety of methods to do curls besides dumbells, barbell, ez bar etc, each with there own advantages and disadvantages so telling someone to just go use the dumbells is rather shortsighted12/6/2006 5:20:08 PM |

You can use other equipment in the open area besides dumbells (i used this name probably inappropriately). I can not do heavy squats, good mornings, rack pulls, or other similar lifts saftely in the open area. Unless you are useing 115 plus w/ a barbell to curl, don't do it.

Who are they? Me.
What is their deal? I'm awesome.
Why do they do it? Didn't feel like changing out of my pajamas.
Aesthetics? Comfort? Performance? No, just didn't feel like changing.
Do any of you people do it? Yes, I do.
Why? Because I don't always feel like changing out of my pajamas.
When did you adopt this practice? I've been wearing my pajamas out and about since I was a child who refused to change out of them.
Do you recall a formative event related to this decision? Yes. I didn't want to go somewhere with my parents so I refused to change my clothes. My parents said, "Fine, you'll go in your PJs," and carried me out into the car and made me go out in my pajamas, thinking I'd be humiliated. I loved it, and I've never looked back.
(Seriously though...I think some people do it because their PJs are already dirty from being slept in so instead of dirtying a fresh set of clothes, they just wear their PJs.)

I'd totally agree with you if the majority of folks weren't scared to do squats in the first place, the sad thing is there are like fivex as many bench racks as squat racks in carmicheal12/6/2006 11:56:29 PM |

The Squat Rack is for squatting (possibly for deadlifts and rack pulls)
if you wanna be a bitch and do BB curls go use one of the many BB's from a bench press or the preloaded straight BB's

agreed
and i can either take up a bench and do curls with the 45lb olympic bar or a squat rack (squat rack preferred because you dont have to straddle the bench) there is no rack specifically designed for the 45lb olympic bar that you can set it down while loaded and not have to worry about the thing falling off... using that style of bar for curls offers you advantages over dumbbells and even the shorter sized bars, thats why you will find people using it for curls and no picking it off the ground is not an option
furthermore most people who want to "use" the squat rack are people who cant push over 185 of 225lbs of weight doing any excersies like squats, shrugs or whatever... and that is just as much of a waste of a squat rack as someone like me doing curls
so quit your bitching12/7/2006 12:38:13 PM |

Considering my "pajamas" (I haven't worn pajamas since I was 9) are sweat pants (or a pair of gym shorts in the summer) and a T shirt.... that doesn't sound too surprising.
What was it like a dude in onesy or something? 12/7/2006 3:23:06 PM |

power rack for squats > power rack for curls
also: someone stole the hooks from the smaller room's power rack in Carmichael...I asked about it like 2 months ago and the guy said they should be getting more....ha, guess that hasn't happened

My little brother took weightlifting 1st period his senior year in high school. he wore pjs to school every morning and would change before 2nd period. He bought a lot of dark fleece and stuff, no sponge bob print, but my dad used to give him hell for it. Dad is still bewildered that his kids would ever go to school in pjs. Since I lived in a dorm in high school i went to most of my 8am classes in pjs 12/8/2006 4:21:23 PM |
