what a typical American wanting to pull in 3+ million a year

I'd do it. So would you and every other red-blooded American.

He's nothing more than a high priced whore, it's hard to respect a guy who calls up a sports radio program not even a week earlier claiming that he'd stay at WV for as long as they'd have him only to leave them a few days later.

^^

that's at least a slightly myopic way to look at it. Sure you double your salary, but you also significantly lose job security and burn a bridge with your alma mater. The Alabama crowd may be the toughest fan base to please in D1A.

^ exactly why they would have to pay me a shit ton to go there

i mean WVU loved him, and at Bama is he goes to 5 straight Rose Bowls and then has a 3-9 season his ass is fired before the season is even over...

hell even a 6-6 season with a loss to Auburn would probably be enough. Being an alumnus with a Big East conference title under his belt (or more, i don't know) and a winning program thus far at WVU under his watch, he'd get a couple of passes if he fell into a subpar season. Not so at bama.

I never got why these guys were all about the money in these types of situations... Once you are making over a million a year, does it really increase your lifestyle that much to make another million? Plus, you are talking about the difference between living in the mountains of WV versus the shithole that is Alabama. You are talking about high stress high pressure job versus a job where you are a god and where you are leading your school to previously unprecedented highs.

I don't get it. I am not in the guy's shoes, but from the outside looking in, it looks like a stupid decision.

^ I feel the same way. Just say nothing if you don't want to burn bridges if things fall through. I hate the new expected "coachspeak" that goes around when coaches are being fired and hired.

To the guy who said "how much does your lifestyle increase after $1 million" -- personally, I think it's HUGE.

$1 million (sadly, very sadly) isn't what it used to be. If he gets $3-4 million per year, he can really ball out of control. Considering decent sized mansions these folks like in easily cost $1-2 mil, I'd say there's a huge lifestyle change between 1 mil and 3 mil per year.

Still, I don't get why he'd leave his alma mater, family, and Morgantown (it's a nice place, actually) to go to Bama. He could've used this for leverage on his existing contract (see: Spurrier getting another 500k/year for doing nothing this year) and stayed at home.

Of course, we know nothing looking from the outside in, but his words last week now mean nothing, which would make me weary if I was a Bama fan as far as trusting a coach.

Sure, a lot of what he said falls into the category of "coachspeak", but he took it to another level, going out of his way to assure everyone on multiple occasions that he wasn't going anywhere, and even lashed out a couple of times when it was reported otherwise.

At the time, it made me respect the man that much more. Of course that was on the condition that he actually kept his word.

no way i'd leave my alma mater for more money. and it's not as if wvu is some iaa team where yeah he went to school there but it's just not enough for an aspiring coach. wvu was as high as #4 this year, iirc. he really could've built a consistant national power there.

edit: i did find it a little strange when he had that whole rant that he's never leaving wvu, and then they asked him if he'd take the bama job if offered and instead of just saying "no" he said something like "i'm not even going to address that after what i just told you." why not just say no?

Haha, go to their scout.com board and just read away. It's pure gold. They are tracking every plane in and out of the Morgantown airport..

Well, once they get tired of him at Bama he can just take all that money and go coach somewhere else, hey WVU might even take him back.

it really is sad, I mean not only is WVU is alma mater, the man spent his life growing up just 30 mins from the University. I really feel for the players, you can tell from their comments that their truely hurt by this.

BTW- what is a contract worth nowdays really. The man just signed a seven-year contract that pays him $1 million this year with an extra $50,000 added every year IN JUNE. Also in 2011, he'll collect an extra 600,00 if he was just still there. This is not chump change we are talking about. I'm sorry but give me job security in a place that loves me and still pays pretty well anyday. News like this make you really appreciate the Greg Schiano and hopefully (let see what happen between now and Jan) Jim Grobe of the world. But I guess, we really shouldn't be talking, we did kinda just go and take BC head coach ( though he did contact us first, so I guess it is not the same)

Man, I know WVU football is life to folks in WV, but this is nuts. From their message board:

Quote :
"Here's the deal...

Fund raising is going on around the state... Trying to arrange enodwments/annuities for RR and assistants.

Pledges are being solicited on a local basis. If you are in Wood County and would like to assist please send me an message and I will provide contact information to register your one time pledge.

Every bit helps. My pledge was $5,000.

All interested parites please contact me ASAP. Thank you and let's get this done. "

Folks just handing over money from their savings account to the university to try and keep a coach that has (apparently) given them the shaft already? Couchburners are loony.

They are hardcore fans. Crazy but hardcore. When your home fans throw bags of piss at opposing players you know they're crazy.

It's looking look he might actually stay at WVU with the deadline being 3pm today. That would be hilarious to see Rodriguez take a piss right on all of Alabama.. to me. Either way it doesn't really matter to me but I'm all for pissing off some Bama folks..

Like I said all along, he should've just used the Bama offer for leverage. But he's already pissed off BOTH fanbases now, which wasn't intelligent.

coach k didn't leave duke when the lakers offered him about ten times his fucking salary because he knows he's got a great job and job security out the ass. Rich should've done the same thing. If he kept winning, wvu would've kept extending his contract and would've kept paying him more.
