They are spending ridiculously. I've read the Tribune is going to be putting the Cubs up for sale so they are heavily backloading contracts and are going to leave the absolute mess that their payroll will be in 3-4 years to the new owners..

FWIW the Mets actually DECREASED payroll by $15M from 2004 to 2006.. which is why I think they were succesful and will be succesful for the longterm..

and FWIW, the trib is making smart moves if they do indeed plan to sell. if the cubs become 07 contenders, that bandwagon will start rolling again and idiots from here to LA will be bleeding cubbie blue.
