Where is it located, what does it do, what’s its budget, where does it get its money, is it worth keeping?
Let’s see this hit 12 pages (not to say that being more knowledgeable about this community resource isn't worth a thread on it's own despite the obvious comparison). 12/10/2006 11:44:13 PM |

It's in Talley on the second or third floor.
And yes, we should keep it.

I've wondered where the mens center is too. Although I think if you ever showed up there with "problems" you'd be shot down by wandering rednecks. 12/11/2006 2:45:16 PM |

It's on the third floor, all the way to the back. That place is one of State's best resources for lots of things pertaining to women's issues/health. They're always really helpful in there, so I'm sure they'd be happy to answer your questions. I did a lot of work with them when I went to State. 12/11/2006 2:47:06 PM |

Hey Guys Women's Center is a great place for women, men, students and staff to go if they need support, want to talk, get involved, they even have a library of their own literature with a wide range of books. The Women's Center is located on the 3rd floor of Talley, open daily with plenty of great programs in the afternoons and evenings. You should stop by if you have any questions, we put on great programs like Take Back the Night, Vagina Monologues, yoga, knitting, Self Defense workshops. The do great work with University Housing and the RAs. They host a Rape and Sexual Assault Hotline (Molly Hays Glander Line).
The gynecology of wing of the Health Center takes care of all exams, tests, etc.
If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them. 12/12/2006 5:46:01 PM |

Supplanter - I can sort of see what you're trying to accomplish by putting the Women's Center up against the LGBT center but there's one minor flaw...
While both centers are "for" everyone on the campus (with regard to general education), about half the students on this campus are female. This percentage is MUCH smaller for LGBT. So while I get your point, there's a big snag.
Aaaghhh...
I'm a female, I knit (well, crochet) but come on now - aren't we just perpetuating stereoytpes by having a KNITTING group!?

If there is a need for a specific activity in which many students enjoy said activity then I don't believe that providing the opportunity to allow students to do said activity as perpetuating stereotypes.
The Women's Center is not the knit and gossip corner, it's much more than that. 12/12/2006 10:41:26 PM |

The information for all of those questions (minus the last one) should be available on the .ncsu domain. Help out the process by searching for the information. The last question is extremely subjective ... probably should be rephrased, "Is it worth keeping ANY student center?". Without going into too much detail, there are a ton of politics involved for the university have such centers, so yes. Any further debate/explanation will be hard to override that aspect. 12/13/2006 2:30:11 AM |

I actually dont like some of the women's center policies- a lot of their programs I've seen fliers for are "women only" - which definately ISN"T for everyone then. I think that's pretty exclusionary.
And what chartreuse said- i'll happily go to a knitting group elsewhere, why the heck should we perpetuate that kind of stereotype though by having it in a publicly funded women's center?
Notice whats there- stuff about vaginas and knitting and "support". Nothing about gaming, sports, or anything ELSE that doesn't fit a neatly defined little stereotype.
That said, i'd be happier to keep it, and deal with the above issues, than to have it the way it is now.
