[quote]DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University may open its classes to some students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but there's no home for rival Tar Heels in Krzyzewskiville.

That's the verdict of Duke student leaders, as well as reluctant administrators who upheld a student government decision to ban some beneficiaries of a joint scholarship program from this year's camp-out for Duke basketball fans.

Krzyzewskiville, named after Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, is a tent city where students wait in line for weeks to obtain good seats in the adjacent Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The interlopers in question are part of the Robertson Scholars, a $24 million scholarship effort that allows a select group of students from Duke and UNC Chapel Hill to take courses at both universities.

Participants are supposed to have full student privileges on both campuses, including access to athletic events.

But last season, a group of Robertson scholars from UNC Chapel Hill went to the Tar Heels-Blue Devils game at Duke and sat in the student section wearing Carolina blue.

It was a colossal affront at one of the season's hottest games. The 13th-ranked Tar Heels held off No. 1 Duke 83-76.

Duke's student senate voted last month to bar UNC Chapel Hill's Robertson scholars from Krzyzewskiville, saying their actions ruined the game for many Duke students last season.

Larry Moneta, Duke's vice president for student affairs, said administrators believe the decision is "over the top," but that it would be wrong for them to get involved.

"To force anything, even if we could, would just exacerbate the animosity and the tension," Moneta said. "We thought it was a mistake to take a prohibitionist approach. But we're going to leave it up to the students to work it out."

Former UNC Chapel Hill political science professor Eric Mlyn, the Robertson program's president, said the ban is unfair. Mlyn said he scolded UNC Robertson scholars for their behavior at last season's game.

"There's no doubt in my mind that what Duke Student Government has done is a clear violation of the spirit of the Robertson Scholars Program," Mlyn said.

Kevin Troy, a spokesman for Duke Student Government President Elliott Wolf, said the camp-out ban doesn't necessarily stop UNC-based Robertsons from getting into the game. They can try to buy tickets on the day of the game that are held for walk-up sales, he said.

"If we were running afoul of contractual obligations (of the scholars program), then the university would have the power to step in," Troy said. "We're not, which is why they're not doing anything."

The Tar Heels will visit Duke this season Feb. 7.[quote]

How are you going to give people full scholorships but not allow them to attend basketball games?

Why is this a reason to hate Duke when we would do the same thing?

I don't want any fucking Tarheels near me.

Actually that's pretty awesome - sounds like Duke's administration is actually giving the students some power - doesn't seem to happen much in general

i'd do the exact same thing. doesn't make me hate duke at all. why would you give student tickets to people you know good and well are going to cheer against you?

[Edited on December 12, 2006 at 12:19 AM. Reason : they deserve it for being so pretentious, imo.]

I already hate Duke.

But.

This might actually make me hate Duke less.

Why should they let UNC students sit in their student section?

well, there are people who go to state who are carolina fans

so they shouldnt be allowed to get tickets for the carolina game?
if these scholars are supposed to be able to have the same access as duke students do then how can the student government do this? what is stopping the duke based scholarship people from getting carolina tickets to the game vs duke?

its a messed up thing to do, to be a student (or a dual school student) and support a rival team, but what the student government is doing is wrong.

Say someone is doing the program where they technically go to another school but theyre here for a semester. We play that person's team in a sport. That person cant get a ticket because they would support their true home school?

duke students pay more to go to duke, so um whats the problem here? Cameron isnt exactly that big either. Taking some courses is not the same as being a full time student. STFU UNC

i agree with duke here. as much as I HATE to say that..

Funny story.. My brother who is a unc-ch fan went to State for engineering back when we still played at Reynolds full time. He would use his student ticket to go to games dressed in his tarheel gear, when ever he got to the front of the line the ticket taker would make him go to the back of the line, so he was always the last one in. hahaha

my opinion is that it's a bitch move. if you want to stop them from sitting in your section, don't whine about, knock some heads. i especially thought the line that "their behavior ruined the game for some duke students" was especially pathetic. i mean, if duke had won, i'm sure you would've have been bothered one bit. but you lost, probably had to eat crow, and decided to go piss and moan to your student government.

duke students are little bitches.

^ yes, that's the kind of response duke should have, just make their experience uncomfortable, don't be all prohibitionist.

i agree with duke here.

It's not like they are not letting them into the games.

They can still get tickets at the general allotment.

Just not the prime seats.

Makes sense.

ok. i'm glad you see it that way. because robertson scholars ARE FULL TIME STUDENTS AT DUKE HALF THE TIME. it's not like they commute there for a day or two a week. they live at duke for one semester, then live at unc the other. i know because a friend of mine was one of the first people to receive this scholarship a few years ago.

Because student seating at UNC games is shit...thats why. I can get a better view from ESPN. Just imagine the entire sideline seating and the steep endzone portion of the RBC center being put in the balcony....thats Student seating at UNC.

how many other schools can complain about a game being sold out. and that, the "wrong" fans were there.

Only in the ACC, but that's what makes it so great!
