I'd leave the auto tranny in there and take care of it. IE extra tranny oil cooler, synthetic fluid, etc.

Simply put, in my opinion, there's nothing better for four-wheeling than a good automatic transmission. It allows for much better power modulation and traction control, and also relieves you of an extra chore or two while driving.

And if you keep yer truck in low range, you'll save your tranny a good deal of abuse.

Unless the truck is in really good shape and/or you have access to all the stuff you need (including pedal quadrant, master and slave cylinders, clutch assembly, flywheel, bellhousing, and a DECENT four speed such as a Muncie 465 or a New Process 435 or a Warner T19A with the right output shaft configuration and transfer case adapter) or a complete parts truck, then you'd really be much better off leaving well enough alone unless the truck has a good deal of sentimental value or something...

Oh, and BTW, a remanufactured automatic tranny can be had for about the same or less money than to do all of the above. And easier to install to boot.

yeah. i'll prolly just leave well enough alone unless one day i blow the tranny, then i'll go from there. im keeping my open for a parts truck, because i do have a lot of work to do on this one. i picked it up for 1000. u can see it in the gallery
