Ive been thinking about cleaning up my engine bay on the si and the nastiest thing in there is the valve cover with paint chipping off everwhere and a stain where it used to leak oil around the gasket. The thing is i want to do it myself because im a poor ass college kid but dont exactly know what i should be doing. I just need to know what paint to use and what might look halfway decent on the motor of a 2000 civic Si. any feedback would be nice

go to autozone or home depot and get that (krylon i think) high heat shit that'll stick to plastics too.

take valve cover off, put on newspaper outside.

spray multiple light coats of your chosen color. avoid runs.

wait to dry completely and reinstall valve cover.

it's eventually going to get covered in shit again anyway though, so its not worth it really

make sure you get some color plastic guards (red and blue go well together) for your wires and a polished oil cap (make sure it is billet, you dont want it compromise the structural integrity of your engine, taht cap is under lots of pressure). Neon string all around too, they are not very expensive these days. As far as valve cover, i suggest High-temp red, blue, or yellow paint for sure will look good. I think Sherving williams is on sale at lowes, i heard they can even mix gliter in it for you. I think thats about it for now, possibly also a titanium heat shield for yor exhaust manifol, it is much lighter than your stock one, make the are faster and looks better. good luck holla if yo need any help or let optmusprimer know if you need to special order that billet cap and the shield

oh jesus christ, just take it off and clean the thing up with degreaser, then spray it down with brake cleaner, let it dry completely, then spray it with black BBQ grill paint and call it a day

you should try and do the acutal painting when its warmest part of the day, and maybe warm the paint can a little with some warm water in the sink before spraying it...

[Edited on December 14, 2006 at 10:03 PM. Reason : you do not need high temp or any primer JUST USE THE BBQ GRILL PAINT you will thank me]

NOT ONE OF YOU FUCKSTICKS HAS MENTIONED PROPER PREPARATION.

You need to get the old shit off first. use a spray can of paint remover and hose that shit off with the garden hose after it's bubbled up real good. Yes, I'm being serious. Repeat if necessary. Oh. DO NOT DO THIS WITH THE VALVE COVER ON THE ENGINE. AND DON'T LEAVE THE FUCKING OIL CAP ON THE VALVE COVER WHEN YOU DO.

Then, scrub really well with solvent (mineral spirits works well) and a scotchbrite pad.

^ I helped a friend of mine polish his valve cover. We pulled the thing off and used a wire brush attachment for a dremel and another smaller one for a drill to get in tighter spaces, and in the competely unreachable places we used 320 grit sandpaper. That will definately get all the old shit off evenly so it doesn't look like shit, provided that you go over it enough times.. Then you can paint on top of that. Just like when we painted his interior we sanded every piece down progressively until 1500 grit.

Dan's right. Any paint job looks like shit if you don't meticulously prepare it.

ahh such deep bullshit in here. if its not wrinkling up, or lifting, then you dont need to strip shit when your goal is to clean up the appearance up enough for resale purposes. you goddamn sure dont need to wirebrush it and sand it with 320 grit and until he posts a pic that shows it as being extremely fucked up i bet he doesnt need to chemically strip it either.

I MEAN, HE IS JUST GOING TO SELL THE CAR GUYS C'MON

good point, fuck taking it off the car, fuck painting it, just take a propane torch and blacken it. although a big torch would soot it up faster.

as a matter of fucking fact, if you want to tell him the RIGHT way to do it the first time, he should get it beadblasted and fucking powdercoated. fuck chemical stripper, what a huge waste of time and money on a simple project. the kid is a beginner, who is selling his shitbox and he wants to make it look .001% nicer. keep it simple for fucks sake.

Withdraw you underwear from your asscrack, man. Goddamn.

chem strip works really well if ya do it right, and it is dirt cheap. And you don't have to take it to a shop with a blasting cabinet. And it works in 15 minutes to an hour...while you're sitting in the den watching the goddamn basketball game.

I did my rudder gudgeon on my boat with it, and dat shit turned out CHOICE...

unless the paint is really really super fucked up there is no reason to strip it. you can degrease it, even scuff it up if you need to, but you dont have to fucking strip it! i have done this to many things and they looked great and after the BBQ paint (or the high temp VHT paint from autozone) cures properly the shit looks great.

before

after

anyone that refers to their vehicle having a gender, especially a large truck as a female, has issues. that probably translates to his love of large, fat women.

okay- number one, how does fixing up the interior and the body make me a street queen. second- to Jeepman (who by the way is the only one whos been polite about the truck (thank you for that)) as far as I know theyre just stock right now. like i said, i literally just bought the truck, its still got temporary tags on it. i found it over Thanxgiving break and my mom picked it up for me the following weekend. its back home in ohio, and i can't wait to get back on tuesday and start workin on it. though i prolly wont do too much over christmas break b/c it doesnt fit in my garage to well. (it clears the door by about a half an inch, and the tires are completely bald, im putting a set of 225s off of my moms car on it for the break b/c i don't feel like drivin 39s on the ice, and im hoping i can still get it in with those on it). im gonna build a small pole barn for it in the spring. i gotta see what i wanna do about changing the gear ratio and axels all of that.

not sure if theyre baja belted's or not. the guy threw em in with the truck. i havent had a chance to look at em at all. i know 2 of em have sidewall damage, but im just gonna put a tube in em and they'll be fine.

not gonna do a whole lot of wheelin with it. mostly just the mudpits at truck nite and shit. and takin it campin in the PA mountains and doin a lil 4x4in up there. im thinkin about addin a 6 inch lift kit later in the summer.

he means that unless you're trailering it to the trail and back, this is assuming it's a trail rig. tubes in a daily driver or a vehicle that will see street time is a bad idea.
