Okay, for anyone who don't know, last night, i went through quit a bit of hazing/harrasment on a different thread because of my "new" 87 chevy pickup. if anyone would like to offer serious advice for the rearend once i change the tires on it, Im open to hear it. im gonna be daily driving the truck this summer, but im gonna wanna do some wheelin in it too. right now, it looks like i'll either be runnin 39s or 35s on it. any of yall's serious advice would be greatly appreciated. i'll admit outright that i don't know too much bout gear ratios and stuff

I totally agree with Joel on this one.

It's got a damn 10-bolt in it, so you shouldn't really hoss it around with big ass 35s, and 39s is asking for trouble.

Not saying a 10-bolt axle won't live up to that kind of abuse, but you really oughta settle for being able to do more with less tire than wagging a ginormous tire-wang that won't get hard.

he could get a semi-float 14 and not have to switch bolt patterns. gets a 9.5" ring gear too. not as good as the full-floater but still way better than a 10 bolt

my 10-bolt shattered after about 2 years of 33's and very little off-roading. do yourself a favor and put a 14-bolt under that bitch.

fine, i'll be nice this time since you're asking an honest question and not posting like a dumbass.

definitely no exscuse not to put in a 14 bolt. they're dirt cheap and easy to swap. unless you plan to regear the front or swap in a different axle, you'll want to match what gear ratio you have now. i would reccomend getting a 4.10 or 4.56 axle though if you're going bigger than 35's. 5.13's are now finally available for the 14 bolt, but that would mean more $$ and labor. it's a dead simple axle to setup gears in though. ideally, you should grab a 14 bolt from a CUCV. it'll have 4.56's and a detroit locker. usually they're very low mileage also.

in a DD, i would stay away from the 39's. i daily drove my ram on 38's and 40's for a few years including numerous trips, 4 wheeling and otherwise, all over the eastern part of the country. it was tolerable, but not much fun. at times it was downright miserable with the bias ply 40's.

stick with a good radial in the 35 inch range. move up to something bigger when you get something else to drive or when you've done other appropiate 4 wheeling upgrades. there's ALOT more things that should come before throwing on the biggest/baddest tires you can find.

yeah, but yours is basically a pavement pounder. still quite amazing it's lasted that long even at that.

^ that hauls 8k#+ trailers, and still tops at at over 110 empty with the stock gears, until i get around to slappin in some 4.56's this spring, i'm slowly getting it built, but a 14 would be a lot of trouble with the wheels i have unless i could find one narrow enough for adapter rings, otherwise a semi floating 12 bolt may be in store, and it is a little less effort involved to keep the rear discs and 6 lug hubs

the first time you jab the brakes hard pullin a bobcat, or kubota, or hurricane, you'll damn near get a chubby, theres a reason rear shoes last 150k miles and pads last about 30k, 2 1/2"x11"drum brakes don't do shit

thanx for the advice. after doing some research this weekend and hearing everyone's input, it definitely looks like this spring will be seeing a 14 bolt axel in the rear. and ill probably leave the stock 10 bolt up front for now unless its already been changed (ill see about that when i get home).

im gonna get the 39s that the dude threw in with the truck inspected and if theres anything wrong with any of em that I can't run 'em, then im gonna look for somethin more like 33s or 35s cos those 39 in. baja belted's are expensive ($363 a piece). if theres nothing wrong with em, then i'll have a decision to make on whether i wanna spend another $5-800 dollars on tires when i have a set with nothing wrong with them.

^not to mention the baja belteds are absolutely useless for anything off road except sand. also, i'm not sure what about don't run a tire with sidewall damage you didn't understand from the other thread?

if having a different bolt pattern front and rear bothers you about the axle swap, you could also swap on 8 lug outer knuckles, hubs, etc. at the same time from an 8 lug 10 bolt. it's not bad for a front axle, if you keep the tire size down it'll probably be a while before you get into stuff that can break it easily.

^^yeah, but towing introduces much different loads/forces on an axle than large tires and hard off road use. towing is still hard on one, just in different areas/ways.

thanx for the tip about the baja belted's and the front axle. its not that i don't understand about sidewall damage (i know a tire is toast if it has sidewall damage)... i was only told about the damage though, i haven't seen it first hand and talking to my mom at home the other night, she said she didn't see any damage on the tires (she's not exactly a professional either though). ill just have to see for myself when i get home
