I'm nervous about starting my first thread in Sports Talk, but here goes.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?page=061221two-sportchart

An interesting look at what schools are the best in football and basketball combined. Some of the rankings are surprising. It's amazing how some schools are so good at one and so bad at the other. I mean, some I can understand (Duke, for instance), but take a school like Penn State (#71 out of 119). They have incredible resources, how are they that bad at basketball?

That's pretty interesting, I would not have thought we would be that high up.

I think what is frustrating is that we always decent at both and never great at either. I think most would prefer the latter.

Some schools only care about certain sports or focus mainly on one major sport.

PSU IS football.. They dont care as much about basketball.

We've had a minor identity crisis the last 20 years. We used to focus mainly on bball and football was second fiddle. Then we had a huge disaster in bball and it fell apart, then we focused on football and achieved some minor success and national notarity. Currently there is a spark of interest in bball due to Coach Lowe and a return to a segment of our "glory years". The next few years look promising in football as well so we'll see if we can be good with both sports at the same time.

I think 5th is the number you're looking for. BC, Maryland, FSU, Ga. Tech, NCSU...

I support any list that puts us ahead of UNC and ECU. Although, I didn't agree with Maryland being that high.

I don't understand why Utah is so low. They did produce the #1 draft picks in both basketball and football recently.

OSU is overrated in basketball? Please enlighten me. Have you seen them play? Have you seen the class they brought in? Have you seen them these past couple years? They're a solid basketball team that is now probably the best team in the nation. I guess you could call that overrated

kinda hard not to be seeing as how the basketball team is awful and always has been, and football was at it's worst for the last few years. aside from this year and last.

but they still beat state

it is just cummulative sagarin ratings......so there will be no bias. this isn't a subjective list, there's no reason to be shocked by any of the results.

geez herb and chuck got ncsu to 24.....now they are gone?

Well...there will be some bias based on the way Jeff Sagarin does his computer rankings. But in general, you're right, this is about as close to an objective list as you can get.

assuming the "two-sports" being discussed are the revenue sports: fball and bball.
