Dog will leave too many scratches. I've had better luck with large snakes.

put a chinese cook on your hood. They are small, and tend not to scratch.

put a piece of aluminum foil the width of the hood down. put it on a towel or the like to keep it from scratching. when a cat steps on the foil, it'll scare it and it won't come back.

^^i would think a car cover would just provoke the use of claws whereas without would just leave pawprints since there isn't anything for claws to grab a hold of.
