make sure you've got all your drivers (including DirectX) updated. Make sure you download any updates for the game itself.

well at first it would say that the original CD needs to be put in, and it would be in and i would hit retry then it would say this...

"Unable to authenticate original disc within the limits
Try again"

^you must mean when i said trying to make a Jetta fast is retarded. How silly of me.. if only i knew more about cars..

My Athlon 64 3500, a gig of ram, and a 7600GT are simply adequate. I doubt a 3yr old laptop has more grunt than that.

But as i said before, feel free to prove anything i say wrong

it says this

this is after i completely installed it. and it asked for the CD.

the box was new with the round tapes on the edges, and when i opened the box, the CD case, which was 3 cds was also in its plastic wrap.

do you guys cd case also look completely blank. there are no cd case covers at all on it. and on the back it has a sticker for online play. looks really slack.

of course the laptop isn't more powerful. but unless it was a budget model i'm willing to bet it should be able to at least run the game.

check out rfactor too. Its $40 online but its a huuuuuuuuge game because its supported by the community. you can do everything from F1 and shifter carts to rally to nascar to even some monster trucks. australian V8 super cars and the touring car championships are pretty awesome. uses the same engine as GTR2

so does this game do a good job with trail braking and threshhold braking if you don't run ABS? or are the pedal setups more like 'on/off' switches with steering wheel/pedal combos?

i was holding out for Forza 2 on the xbox and going to get the wireless xbox360 wheel/pedal combo...but if this games as good as it sounds i may just get this first :-P

which brings me to my next question, will the wireless xbox360 wheel/pedal combo work with the PC like the PS2 and Xbox360 controllers work?

the game is pure simulation. it was designed by fia racing teams, and are used by alot of them. you can download motec data software from their website for gtr2, and it'll give you more data than you'll ever understand.

^nail on the head.

This game is dead-fucking-on, so much so it can be pretty infuriating in pure simulation mode.

I don't know about yall, but playing without ANY real feedback makes it about 100 times harder than driving in a real car.

^So so true...I spin all the time in racing games and grumble about not being able to "feel" the limits of the car...and my friends who have never driven a real car all out just don't understand, lol. It's even worse in motorcycle racing games.

if you dial in your wheel well you can feel the tires vibrate and even shudder while understeering. the rear wheels are a little harder to feel, but you can set it so they will vibrate the wheel a bit too. you have full wave form type, freq, and magnitude control if you hax0r the settings file if your wheel supports it. you can also feel a little tire/tread squirm while threshold braking, and def when ABS kicks in. Itd be nice to have a good FF pedal setup...

get rFactor and run the F1 cars. its fast and fun as hell and will teach all you need to know about threshhold braking. they lock 'em up like nothing. The cars go so fast that i can barely think fast enough to keep up. its nuts

If you look into the data files, you can also see how they model different chassis and suspension types. They have 3D models and show all the pivot points, etc. So if you care to dig, you can really appreciate whats going on 'under the hood'.

There is also great web community support with tons of car, track, and texture downloads. I use the Logitech MOMO FF wheel. It provides great "feel" and has the buttons you'll need for pit requests, headlights, etc. Can't rave enough about this game.
