Heard a lot of debate today on whether San Diego's Shawne Merriman should be considered for Def POY after suspension for banned substances.

Some say who cares b/c pretty much everyone in the NFL is roiding

Other say hey baseball players are winning awards/breaking records although not all have been found guilty

I personally dont think he should be in a year in which he was suspended for using banned substances

Jason Taylor should win it hands down. He has been amazing this year.

hell no.

besides Taylor deserves it anyway. TEN forced fumbles? Thats insane

Not to mention 2 INT's from the DE spot and he ran them both back for TD's.

Merriman is a very good player but he's a blitzing linebacker. Taylor is an ELITE football player.

Give it to Merriman. His team is about to win the superbowl.

I could see the lean for either player.

Remember, Merriman missed 4 games, so he shouldn't even be in the running for this statistically, but guess what, he is.

I think Taylor will and should get it, but him coming out and blasting Merriman about this tells me that he doesn't think he'll get it.

Maybe if Merriman hadn't screwed up and missed 4 games he would be in the lead.

Taylor all the way.

But Chargers to the Superbowl.

Are you fucking kidding me? Merriman is fucking elite if I've ever seen it. Hell, if he could throw some INT's and fumble a few times, I might even call him a golden god.

Rally, you're just a douche. You ride nuts like you're paid to be gay.

jason taylor is only bitching, because he wants to win dpoy. if merriman weren't favored over him, or if he weren't in the running, then taylor probably wouldn't have said shit.

to answer your question though, yes, merriman should win dpoy. he is still 2nd or 3rd on the sack list after missing 4 games. watching him play, and the chargers without him, it's abundantly clear that merriman has a monumental effect on offenses. he forces fumbles with half of his sacks, he bats down passes, he pressures qb's and cause them to throw picks, he attracts extra blockers and attention. mofo is just straight up disruptive. the best part is that he harasses the offenses at some of the most crucial moments, like 4th down conversion attempts.

he probably would've broken the sack record had he not missed 4 games. even still, he has 15.5 or 16 sacks.

dpoy shouldnt be given to anyone suspended for doping

if you've been watching though, you can clearly see that the chargers lacked a viable pass rush in those 4 games. the difference with and without merriman is stark. merriman is a terrorist.

the panthers would lose with or without peppers. actually, that's exactly what they have been doing the past couple of weeks, sans the last falcons game.

no

and i don't think he will, given how the NFL is trying to tone down "family-unfriendly" stuff like excessive celebration

Oddly enough I just don't give a shit that he was juicing.

For some reason baseball records seem more sacred. Even though I'm much more of a football fan, I just don't care.

^ nobody gives a shit about steroid use in football. If that Panthers story broke about a World Series runner-up there would have been roundtable discussions and government intervention. There is just too much media money to be lost if the NFL had a steroid scandal.

There is ZERO doubt in my mind that pro football had an equally large problem with steroids..

V I agree with that, but Selig didn't even have full autonomy until recently.. he still sucks though at everything..

[Edited on December 28, 2006 at 4:36 PM. Reason : did they ever confirm what Merriman used?]

Oh, I agree.

I think the issue is that everyone in America grows up on stories about Ruth, Mantle, Maris, Aaron, and all the rest.

Even though the NFL is more popular now, it doesn't have the same mystique and tradition that baseball has always had.
