It's in the same stage as Rodriguez to 'Bama. This will actually happen though.

$40M. Clearly, the state of Alabama needs a new football coach more than dealing with the huge amount of impoverished families.

And that is why the state of Alabama is more of a joke than the state of South Carolina.

seriously... what the fuck Saban, leave LSU one season after being guaranteed the highest salary in CFB, just to jump ship to an SEC rival two years later?

Fuck you, man. Fuck you with a splintered broomstick.

Yeah, half are Auburn fans and there are some oddballs that cheer for UAB and the historically black schools.

Question though. Lets say Saban signs for 10 years for $40 million. In three years, lets say he's going 7-5, 8-4. Not really wowing potential recruits, not making the SEC championship game, not winning national titles. What is the University of Alabama going to do? Go bankrupt buying out $28 million worth of a contract left?

This is financially stupid for the Tide and their AD. He's getting fired in a couple years if Saban doesn't walk on water.

I didnt mean they were "the best", I just meant that in modern football, 1936 on, they are the top program, there is no higher position than head coach of Bama. Only one close would be head coach of fucking ND

^^^ Since when is 1936 modern? If you're talking modern, it has to be the '70s at farthest back.

sigh, I once again note that 95% of sports talk posters have no idea what they are talking about....

its an actual term, "Modern college football", it doesnt mean modern as in the last 2 years you dumbshit. 1936 is the first year of the AP Poll and is recognized as the start of "modern college football". Before that you had Yale, Harvard etc winning national titles left and right because the northeast didnt even take into account teams from the south, midwest, and west aside from ND. So, if you use data before 1936, Yale (something like 20 National Championships) and Harvard would be badass college football teams in terms of national champions, so people usually only consider things post 1936

Here are the top 10 from 1936-2005 based on number of wins:

1 Oklahoma
2 Alabama
3 Tennessee
4 Texas
5 Penn State
6t Nebraska
6t Ohio State
8t Michigan
8t Notre Dame
10 Southern Cal

alabama won a national title just as recently as 1992.. a top prestigious school like notre dame hasnt had one since the 80s but everyones all over their nuts still...

bama just got ratted out and screwed by the death penalty in ncaa violations, they are just one good coach away from being back to national contention. If Saban comes to bama, i would doubt them having 7-5, 8-4 type seasons once he establishes his system, he already knows that division anyway from coachin at lsu

info on national championships:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I-A_national_football_championship

^^if were talkin post 70s and past, then notre dame wouldnt even be that prestigious, 10 of their 12 or 13 (whatever it is)recognized national titles came before 1970

What is laughable about this is that the University of Alabama Board of Trustees blocked UAB's hiring of Jimbo Fisher for $600,000 because of financial considerations, well we see where all the finances went to.

^^^^^Nice list. I always appreciate facts. But it would be interesting to see that list broken down into the first half of that 70-year span and the second half. Say 1936-1971 and 1971-2006. I bet you'd see different results. That was my point.

haha, i didnt even really look at the 1800s til just now, the first few years national titles were granted to Princeton with 1-1-0 and three straight 1-0 records...i can only imagine it was like Princeton vs Harvard, winner takes the crown

Fine, I did not know that. From 1936 onward may be called the modern era, but I still disagree that anything before the 1970s or 1980s counts.

The modern era of college football that we're in now changed over time with:

-college football has become less of a hobby of academics and more of a minor league for a professional league
-big-money contracts of national TV coverage and cable, the subsequent money explosion
-the realignment of conferences, the Southwest Conference is no more, the Big Eight is no more, the Big East never existed, was formed, and then shellacked again, the ACC was shellacked, the big move of all major conferences from a balanced schedule to one of 12 teams to have a conference championship game, the vast number of schools like FSU, Penn State, and Miami that were independents joined conferences
-the reduction in scholarships allowed to college football programs by around 30, meaning that one school like Ohio State for example could not get three QBs out of high school every year, and those leftover players that OSU could not pick up could go to places like Akron and Cincinnati
-the fermentation of football teams that became national programs that were not named Army, Navy, or Notre Dame. Once this happened, recruiting became nationalized. In other words, Alabama can have kids from outside the south come play football in Tuscaloosa and it's not looked at as weird.

even last year, alabama was pretty close to representing the SEC in either a national title game or a BCS game...the injury to Prothro(dynamic do it all receiver) in the beatdown they put on Florida last year really was the downfall of the offense...

They had the number 1 or 2 defense and a good college qb and lost close games to lsu and auburn that i think wouldve been won if they had Prothro. Finished 10-2 riding behind a killer defense

Hey Jaybee, remember that goalline fumble in the Tennessee game last year?

^ fuck yes

^^^ you arent seeing what I am saying... Not saying they are they best team at all, Bama has been in turmoil since Stallings left, and some would say Bear, but the fan base, etc, Bama is the biggest along with ND, its just been down for a decade or so, kind of like how ND was down for a long time. Basically Bama and ND are the two positions that I dont see anyone using as a stepping stone to another job, you cant get higher

guitarguy, my point is that the money was already there. Billy Badass thought he could duplicate his successes at the next level, and walked away from MAJOR money; Betsy Blowhard was more indicative of the final result in south Florida (if this is indeed final). So now he's gonna further degenerate into Benedict Bitchmade; I hope LSU beats them by 60 every year.

^^ no I am not, and huge national fan base? that makes a great program? ... Not sure about that, thats more of a bandwagon program. I am thinking more about a rabid fan base, loyal fan base, years and years of kicking ass, great coaches, great stadium, great campus environment, great talent etc.

A huge national fan base is usually just for whatever the hot team is at the moment, see Miami in the 80s, Florida State in the 90s, USC now, Ohio State now etc

actually Miami is a perfect example, they have been successful, but havent been around that long, shitty stadium, shitty local fan base, majority of their fans never stepped foot on campus etc. Great team, yes, great "all time" program? no, not yet

I was about to mention this. They also say this after they shell out $4 million to buy out Shula. Guess this is what happens when everyone on the board is a Bama alum and the president is Bear Bryant's son.

If I was UAB, I'd sue.

The ~$30 million buyout when he starts sucking is gonna kill 'Bamas funding...but for realz, if I were Saban I'd just do an awful job so I'd get the boot in 2 years and pocket that change

I have no respect for the man now. They can give their "coach speech" all they want when asked about other jobs, but don't sit there and flat out say "I'm not going" "I'm not interested" "how many times and different ways do I need to say it" and then do it.
