Millen staying Lions President despite 24-72 record (.250 winning percentage) in six years (with a best record of 6-10 in 2004).

I feel so sorry for Lions fans. Dear God, if the Ford Family run Ford Motor Company like William Clay Ford runs the Detroit Lions, no wonder they're near bankrupt.

Oh well, maybe it'll all go right next year. They have the #2 pick in the draft. Hey, they can pick Calvin Johnson!

I wish I could suck at my job as much as Matt Millen has for 6 years, and still get paid. What a lucky bastard.

Sports Illustrated article:

"Just got my hands on a top-secret press release that was about to be confiscated by Detroit Lions president Matt Millen minutes after being approved by Detroit Lions president Matt Millen, who failed to read it the first time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TO ALL MAJOR MEDIA OUTLETS

Detroit Lions To Keep Millen; Owner Extols Fun and Excitement of Top-10 Picks

The Detroit Lions announced on Tuesday that team president Matt Millen, who has guided the club to a 24-72 mark in his six seasons of outstanding leadership, will not being fired.

Lions owner William Clay Ford, whose team has finished last in its division four of the previous six seasons and next-to-last the other two years, explained in a written statement: "The only real justification for keeping Ol' Matty around is that I really, really hate the fans. I know it sounds crazy, and I can't even remember why I hate them, but when you really think about it, this is the only explanation that makes sense.

"Those hundred or so fans who protested during our Dec. 24 game against the Bears, they just don't get it. They can stand in the Ford Field atrium and chant 'Fire Millen!' all they want, but it's only going to make me dislike them more, not to mention make it more likely to keep Matty around.

"The reason we fired defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson and offensive line coach Larry Beightol on Tuesday is because we're trying to trick our more gullible fans into thinking we actually care about them and the future of this franchise. The majority of our fans just don't understand how football works. Not every team can win a Super Bowl. Only one can win it each season -- one out of the 26 or whatever.

"The way we look at it is, if we can't really compete -- and, let's face it, we can't -- we might as well try for high draft picks every year, because, hey, the NFL Draft can be pretty darn exciting."

During Millen's fantastic tenure, the Lions have twice picked second, once picked third and have had three other top-10 picks. Detroit will pick second in the 2007 draft.

"No other GM or team president in the league has been as successful as Matt at landing high draft picks on such a consistent basis," Clay noted in his statement. "With all the hoopla surrounding the draft these days, we've decided that we can actually bring our fans more excitement, year in and year out, by keeping them on edge over who we're going to waste our top pick on. Maybe it'll be an overrated, crybaby wide receiver. Or maybe an overrated receiver who always gets hurt. Or maybe we could totally luck out and draft a receiver who's actually good. Looking at it now, we're 1-for-3 in the department, which I hear is pretty good ... or maybe I'm thinking of baseball."

With the Oakland Raiders likely to take Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn with the first overall pick, the Lions will have their choice of either Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson or USC's Dwayne Jarrett at the No. 2 spot.

"Before deciding whom to pick," Clay continued, "we're going to have Matt and what's left of our staff research ask every other team whom they think will be a better pro -- and then we'll pick the other guy. Or, ideally, we'll trade the pick for more picks, all of which will be used on wideouts. Once we finally shore up that position, possibly by 2010, then we'll start fixing the rest of the team. But only if our fans stop whining about 'wanting to win games' and 'being competitive.' Sheesh. They're so annoying. Why can't they stop complaining?

"The only thing the team did wrong all year, at least in my opinion, is beat Dallas, which probably cost us the No. 1 overall pick. And I'm going to talk to Matt about that. Right after I give him another contract extension.""

I remember when he was just an idiot announcer on Fox.

When he was announced as Lions President, I was like, WTF is that a joke?
