What kind of recovery does the dog need and how much time is it before everything's healed?
Also, about how much does it cost? Money's not an issue I'm just curious about it.
The little fella goes under the knife Wednesday morning...
Also, recently he's stopped squatting while peeing sometimes, and as a result pees on his front legs. WTF is up with that and what can I do about it? 1/8/2007 1:35:07 PM |

If you get the laser removal then the recovery can be slightly quicker
My dog got neutered and was runnin around the next day like nothing had happened
It heals up in a week or so 1/8/2007 1:38:49 PM |

^I'll ask the vet what procedure she is using.
(of course I'll ask the vet all these questions)
Thanks 1/8/2007 1:43:51 PM |

about a week is normal recovery time
you can get a spca voucher and it's like 20 bucks.
mine still squats to pee (1.5 years old) and it looks like he's not going to switch it up anytime soon. 1/8/2007 1:45:29 PM |

The hardest part of the whole recovery process is making sure they stay away from the incision and making them rest until they've healed enough. He will probably be bouncing off the walls in less than 36 hours after surgery and making you (who will have been instructed to limit your pup's activity) pull your hair out. 1/8/2007 3:01:36 PM |

I don't think my black lab even noticed that he got snipped. He was rarin' to go as soon as I went and picked him up. You need to make sure you keep the area clean and dry, it'll probably take about a week or so for it to fully heal. He needs to get his rest so try to keep him calm and sedate. 1/8/2007 3:11:38 PM |

Mine was tired as hell the day of the operation. The next day he was almost at full strength. It can take a while for the wound to fully heal, but I suppose a week is about average.
If you're having trouble with him being too hyper after the surgery, there's a liquid called Calm Down (I think?) that you can get at Petsmart, or just toss him a benadryl. 1/8/2007 3:19:44 PM |

Mine didn't act any different after he was neutered either. Just don't give him a bath for a few days in case the stitches are dissolvable.
As far as the peeing is concerned, my dog used to pee on his front legs when he started lifting but has recently stopped. The issue was that he liked to pee and walk at the same time (looked like a dumbass), so now when he stops to pee I shorten the leash and don't let him walk until he is done. 1/8/2007 3:48:47 PM |

That was NOT cheap. Should get some money back from the insurance co, but yikes.
They straight up removed his balls, and used internal stitches. He has no cone around his head and the vet said he shouldn't really lick the wound much.
Well, he's already licked/tried to lick it A LOT and its bleeding a little bit. I hope it leaves it alone otherwise I'll have to go back for a cone 1/10/2007 7:25:55 PM |

yeah they should have given you a cone or something because ANY animal is going to lick at it
and my dog pees on his front legs too, drives me batshit because I have to clean his feet 3 times a day. 1/10/2007 7:28:12 PM |

my last sell of the night at the vet clinic was an e-collar cone. plenty of dogs will walk it right into the side of a doorway until they learn to handle it. they can be funny about eating with em on too. i think our elizabethan collars are about $17 each for big dogs... but a retail place like petsmart can probably beat the price of a vet clinic. 1/10/2007 8:59:58 PM |

^^Dude it was only a simple question. Just relax man, no need to get up in arms. I personally oppose neutering in dogs for my own reasons and just wondered the reason here. 1/10/2007 9:04:59 PM |

I had him neutered b/c I think all the animals that have to be put down every year is a huge tragedy and if I can prevent a few more unwanted, then good. 1/10/2007 9:33:00 PM |

Is this implying that dogs that go unneutered soe their royal oats all across the neighborhood? If you're a dog owner, you should be in charge of who your animal mates with. Neutering is not the answer.
As a matter of fact, it takes the aggression out of an animal and makes them overweight. I'm sorry but, removing the livelyhood and making my animal fat is not an option too me. No sir-ree bobcat.

^^it does not take the aggression out of an animal and it does not make them fat.
medical conditions aside, lazy and uneducated owners make fat dogs fat.
and as far as aggression goes, it helps reduce aggression however a dog bred for aggression or a dog that has dominance issues (just 2 examples) will still likely exhibit those traits post neuter. Case in point my chocolate lab. He was neutered at 6 months and was a healthy 85-90 pounds when full grown. He also had serious aggression issues, to include attacking my entire family, that took years to work through. Before he passed he was an awesome dog, but that was a result of his age and LOTS of training and patience.

Earl, you only say that b/c as the owner of a male dog/cat/whatever your pet can run off and knock up someone else's pet and you'd never know about it. you wouldn't have to deal with the pregnancy and finding homes for the puppies/kittens/whatever.
*shakes head* ...just like a man...
chopping the dog's nuts off doesn't mean you're chopping yours off, which is what all of you men are afraid of. your dog is still male and just as manly. get over yourself. 1/11/2007 1:37:58 PM |

That's one of the most ignorant things I've heard all day. And why is it that the majority of people who have issues neutering their dogs are guys? I mean are y'all personally affected? You own an animal. A dog. It is your pet, not your child.1/11/2007 1:38:12 PM |

I hope Earl doesn't own any animals, and one day gets neutered himself.
My dog still has his e-collar on. The wound can get infected and he won't leave the spot alone, it's been a week. I plan on keeping it on for 10 days and then go from there. I also leash him up in the apt. so he can't run around and jump. Maybe you could do that for your puppy, just wrap the leash around something secure. Limited mobility will prevent the wound from reopening... 1/11/2007 1:51:25 PM |
