I have my PS3 hooked up to my LCD TV as component 1080I. I bought a HDMI cable and hooked it up and its running 1080P, but it looks like it lost alot of colors. I tried another HDMI cable, but it still looks worse than the component. Any ideas?

There is a setting in the PS3 to switch the output and I had to change that before it would display any image with the HDMI

I have a generic brand, but my roomate has a good brand. I think he has monster cables or something and it looks the same way when using his cable.

well what i would do is start by looking this issue up in ps3 forums, and making an online petition and emailing sony the url of the petition and complain about it - maybe this is an issue that could be addressed in an dashboard update.

I googled it and havent seen any other postings about this issue. I need to try another LCD TV when I have a chance and make sure its not my TV. Maybe try another PS3 on my TV.

This is probably specific to your TV.


TVs handle different signals differently. It is possible that the processing circuitry (inside your TV) that handles the HDMI signal is not as good or is better than the one that handles the Component inputs. On my TV (Toshiba 52HM84), for instance, the picture is noticeably darker when coming through HDMI. You should really own a calibrating DVD such as Avia or Digital Home Essentials anyway, so it's just a matter of recalibrating your picture.

The difference b/w HDMI and Component (assuming everything else is the same) is barely noticeable, anyway. If component looks better to you, then use component.

more than likely (not saying this for sure), if you have a 1080p TV, it is doing some reprocessing of its own. Up until very recently, only the VERY top-of-the-line 1080p TVs actually accepted 1080p inputs. The majority of them do some pretty heavy duty processing of signals to get the 1080p picture.

You should check up on that... which is your TV, btw?

your tv is probably 720p/1080i and since 1080p's signal requires twice the bandwith of either of those you're losing 1/2 the signal somewhere cause your tv cant handle it...
set the ps3 to something your tv can actually do like 720p

HDMI cables carry digital signals, the colors won't change because of a shitty cable, you either get signal or you don't.

On most, if not all, HDTVs different inputs have different picture settings. All you need to do is adjust the brightness/contrast/color settings on the HDMI input the PS3 is connected to. It's surprising that the colors would be diminished seeing as most TVs are sent from the factory with crazy high brightness/contrast.

You should do what FanatiK suggested and get a calibration dvd and stick that in your PS3 and try to adjust the picture like that.

There is nothing wrong with your PS3, HDMI cable or TV.

I'm saying the tv,if its 1080i or 720p, cannot process a full 1080p hdmi signal


the hdmi cable can handle it fine but the tv can't.

I have the Hisense TL3220 32 in. LCD Television. Yall were right, I thought it said it could handle 1080p, but looking at the specs now it only says 1080i. I'll try it again at 1080i tonight and see how it looks. Thanks!!

the BEST way would be an HDMI cord (bought from monoprice.com, so you don't overpay for it)

2nd best would be Component cables.


These are the only 2 ways to get it to display in HD, the bundled cables will NOT cut it.

it should just magically work with HDMI... is your TV 1080p? It would say it if it were, it's a fairly new thing... like in the last 9 months. HDTVs from before then are only 1080i
