In a Dell 4500 Desktop: is it easy and straightforward? I'm trying to decide whether i should try it myself (no computer instruction) or ask someone.

If all you are doing is adding an additional HDD to your system for storage (in other words you're not replacing a hard drive, installing an operating system, etc), you should probably be able to do it yourself. You should be able to see how to plug in a ribbon (data) cable as well as a power cable based on looking at other drives in the computer. The only thing that might cause you a couple headaches would be drive termination but that probably wouldn't come up

i just did this last week. it's easy. open her up and follow the instructions that came with the new hdd. all you do is snap it into the addition hdd slot and plug 2 cords in (data and power). the only problem i had was that it assigned itself a drive letter that was already taken, so i changed it.

If you threw out your manuals, like I did, Dell should have documentation on their support website specific to your machine model. support.dell.com, browse around a bit, should be a place you can input your system's serial number and it can pull up anything from there.

it really should be simple, provided that you have two IDE ports, and most computers have that nowadays

I mean, it's so easy... a CAVEMAN could do it...
