He revels the role of being unpopular with the illusion that his policies are correct. Despite the mea culpas that he has been forced to issue, recently, it's impossible for him to admit that his judgment is very bad.

Customarily, if you don't know what to do, you have no choice but to be flexible and open to other options. That's what good leaders do. Instead, he just puts on the show of listening to criticism, and retreats to the redressed but same old policies. The guy is just not a good leader. Being "decisive" doesn't amount to anything (and often amounts to a lot of shit) when your judgment is awful.
He mentioned that he was not going to betray his ideology. His ideology is wrong. Iraq is not going to turn in to this happy, western-style country that is a strong US ally, especially with us pressing hard to make it like that. If he were worried about Iran gaining influence, he wouldn't have taken Saddam out in the first place. GWB created this opportunity for Iran.

The truly galling part of this is that every middle east expert (state dept type people who were ignored) predicted this would happen. It's not a case of knowing better with hindsight.
