I have a little pocket bike that isn't running. The historty: I was riding it one day, and it ran out of gas. I filled it back up, it started, ran, then died. After that, it wouldn't start. So far, I put in fresh gas/ oil, cleaned the plug, and verified a spark. I have also played with the fuel cutoff valve and the choke with no success.
Any ideas, what do I need to do next. I have no clue with two strokes. My next step is to pull the motor out and fully dissassemble and clean it. I would like to avoid that though.
Thanks 1/16/2007 8:29:07 PM |

when an engine doesn't start, you can't beat simply pouring raw gas/oil mixture into the cylinder. It'll run for a few seconds, and at least get a few revolutions out of the engine which can go a long way to pulling fuel through the carb and maybe knocking out anything stuck in there 1/16/2007 8:35:10 PM |

tripleD4u- I can check the amount of compression on saturday at work, I don't have a guage here. tawaitt- I can try using some straight gass into the cylinder, how about lighter fluid? optmusprimer- I know very little about carbs. How would I go about checking or cleaning out the carb on a two stroke? 1/16/2007 8:41:44 PM |

yeah, having run it dry it's possible you sucked some some trash out of the tank.
have you verified that gas is even getting to the carb? could be you need to to what tawaitt mentioned to pull enough vacuum to reprime the system. you can also remove the air cleaner and spray starter fluid or something in that way.
if the carb does need cleaning, it's probably a pretty simple needle and float type setup. just tear it down, soak the parts in cleaner, and reassemble. i would reccomend flushing the tank also and putting a little generic inline filter on it too. 1/16/2007 8:49:44 PM |

I think the pocket bikes usually have an all-position metering carb like a Walbro or a Zama (cheap ass chinese Walbro wanna-be).
I bet you might have issues with that. They ain't too hard to service, but they do have two needle valves (one for high speed and one for idle/low speed) that you need to write down how many turns you unscrewed them if you disassemble it.
They also have a diaphragm pump and metering needle that you need to clean and inspect. No float bowl.
No different than a chainsaw. 1/16/2007 9:11:11 PM |

^you're right. every one i've seen does have a metering carb. just like a blower, weed eater, chainsaw, etc.
dunno what i was thinking about, i guess some 4 stroke stuff.

probably water or trash in the carb, once water gets in there, the surface tension is to high to go through the jets, take it apart and clean it, they are really simple, its not like a quadrajet or anything 1/16/2007 10:34:14 PM |

i like q-jets. damn good carb if you know how to tune one. they don't mind steep angles with a few tweaks either. 1/16/2007 10:45:14 PM |

One of the best carbs out there. That bowl being centrally located does help in the steep angle department. 1/16/2007 11:05:49 PM |

I ground the plug and pull the chord, and watch the plug spark, so yes. 1/17/2007 4:17:44 PM |
