Obviously I dont have my W2 yet, so I cant file, but I am tryin to figure out how much of a refund I will get from last year. Is there any accurate place I can just plug in my income and get a realistic refund number? 1/17/2007 9:38:58 AM |

the one i used was the HR block one. actually it probably is fairly accurate since it allows you to import that data into their online filing system and do your taxes right on the spot. in that case, i can't wait to get that check 1/17/2007 10:25:13 AM |

I used the H&R Block calculator to estimate my tax refund a couple of weeks ago, and I just did my taxes using TurboTax. It was fairly close. 1/17/2007 10:26:36 AM |

yea it said I was going to get 3,577 back...and I thought that seemed a little high. This is the first year that I have worked an entire year though, so I dont know..maybe it's accurate. 1/17/2007 10:52:54 AM |

That is certainly better than someone who is getting nearly 4K back. Of course, every year around this time you have all these people rejoicing about loaning the government thousands of dollars interest free. You people are so generous. Dubya would be proud.1/17/2007 11:04:43 AM |

More people need to realize this. I'd rather cut them a check for an amount just under the threshold for having to pay the fee you incur for underpayment.
Interesting how if you owe them (made up numbers used) $1000 they slap on a $100 fee but if they owe you $1000 you can't assess them a fee.1/17/2007 11:51:54 AM |

Actually, the goal is to break even. So I'm not upset that they won't give me a refund this year. That just means I got more money in the long run. When you get money back, it's just like someone said...the government was holding your money without giving you interest. So the money they give back to you is worth less than it was when you made it last year.
So instead of , I'm thinking more like 1/17/2007 12:03:16 PM |

^^agreed...in fact, i just used the IRS withholding calculator to figure out a better number of exemptions and changed my W-4. This is my first full year with being able to write off my mortgage interest, so that had a huge impact on my return.

Best thing to do is go on Turbotax.com, fill out your filing, and it will tell you your refund. You only pay them when you submit to the IRS, so just dont submit it. 1/17/2007 12:57:56 PM |

Turbo Tax sucks if you are wanting to file additional expenses (as a parent) such as childcare, or college loan intrest, etc.
As a single student or grad., I think its ok, but there are numerous better options if you have deductions that you want to file. 1/17/2007 1:08:37 PM |

ive always found the h and r blocks software gives me the best return.
(i typically fill out a couple each year to see which one has the best results.)

Darnit, you beat me to it. I always laugh at people who love getting these huge refund checks in the mail; they think Uncle Sam is giving them money. They don't realize that they loaned it to the government interest free... The smallest refunds = the best.1/17/2007 5:11:23 PM |
