'85 toyota 4runner sr5, 217,000 miles

as soon as i get in it tonight, feels like there is only like half a clutch pedal, the bottom half

short drive to church, no problems

drive to lowe's 5 minutes away and by the time i get there, shifting getting increasingly difficult

go inside, come back out and wont go in gear, only like one inch of pedal left

previous owner said in the 11 years he owned it, he never put a clutch in so i figured it was

about time for one before i even bought it

throwout bearing?

should i just go ahead and upgrade clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and flywheel?

mostly highway driven at the moment, but wheeling plans in the future

plans for 4.88's with 35" tires

i want a solid mall crawler that will perform when, not if i take it offroad (75% highway driven)

are air lockers or detroit lockers a better choice?

thanks in advance

uhh, did you check the fluid? if its low then you probably have a leaking slave cylinder, if not, then possibly a defective master cylinder, most of the time the first symptom of a clutch wearing out is slipping and rough engagement, and a throwout bearing raises hell

another vote for slave cylinder. mine died and it slowly started shitting the bed like it sounds like yours did.

something was leaking last week, tanish gray under the cab on forward... didnt find exactly

until tonight.

ill have to check

i was always told that when your slave cylinder went, it just went, no real warning, just the pedal falling and u get a new one. that's what i had to do.

on second thought, ur shit's totaled. i'll give you 200 dolla fo it

also, i'd do a detroit rear, and if you have the money a selectable will be nice in the front.

selectable as in you can turn it on or off. if you do the arb it's going to be way more expensive than the detroit. the detroit is an automatic locker. when torque is applied it locks. you have to turn the arb on. also: with the arb you'll need the arb compressor or an air compressor of some sort. either way would be "right" but with the arb you could turn it off on tight turns on trails which would be nice

probably the slave if it didn't get better with pumping. not definite though, could still be the master. usually when a master goes bad, you can pump the pedal a few times and it'll act better. highly doubt it's the clutch itself, when a disc goes bad that doesn't affect shift effort.

of course, check the obvious being the fluid level. didn't see if you've done that.

holler if you have any questions, etc. with your build. i did an 84 a couple years ago, and i've worked on a bunch of other people's.

What happens if you run 4.88 gears with 31" tires?

^^yeah man, just hit me up whenever. doing pretty good overall. hand and right leg have healed. i was supposed to have surgery for a bone graft in the left leg at the end of this month, but it's been postponed for another month. apparently there are still some signs of infection. if it doesn't get better by then, they'll have to do surgery just to clean it out then close it and wait some more.

after the bone graft, i'll be stuck in the hospital a few more days and it'll be almost like starting the recovery over again which sucks. 3-4 months after the bone graft will tell what level of use i get back.

if you had 4.88's an 31's, highway driving would be kinda bad. it wouldn't be terrible, but you wouldn't want to cruise much more than maybe 55-60 or it'd be screaming pretty good. for reference, you probably have 4.10's stock. i'm assuming it's not a turbo, then you'd have 4.30's.

I think 4.88s are fine on 31's as long as you don't drive a whole ton of miles on the interstate everyday. 2nd gen 4runners w/ v6 auto like mine had 4.88s stock with that tire size.
