I just started doing high intensity interval training in addition to my other workout of 20 minutes of cardio and then weights. Will it have much effect if I'm also doing the cardio?

be careful not to overtrain
when it really comes down to it fat loss (which I assume is what you're after) is and always will be a matter of caloric deficit. Personally I would ditch the regular cardio and just do HIIT. 1/22/2007 4:13:46 PM |

My only question there is, will I lose cardiovascular efficiency if I drop out the regular cardio? 1/22/2007 4:17:42 PM |

you should still get the benefits by doing HIIT...the intensity is greater than that of regular cardio 1/22/2007 4:20:03 PM |

It depends on what you mean by cardiovascular efficiency. If you are just in it for getting ripped, stick with the HIIT. But if you want to have a more broad health portfolio, then don't forget to do longer lower intensity cardio sessions. 1/22/2007 4:24:55 PM |

i think i'm gonna give this a try. do you know of any good resources for an HIIT program? I've been dieting, lifting weights and doing cardio for the past 8 months and have lost 25lbs and 4 inches in my waist but i'd like to get to 7% body fat (I'm at 12% now) by this summer. 1/23/2007 2:08:42 PM |

^You want to drop 41% of your current body fat by summer? If you were starting out at 25% body fat, that might be a reasonable goal, but I expect this is going to be tough unless you start running 50+ kilometers a week and make significant diet changes (like no beer, no fried food, and a max of 17.5% of calories from fat). 1/23/2007 4:12:50 PM |

i'm meeting with my trainer today so i'll see what she has to say concerning a realistic goal. i guess 7% might be too lofty. 9% or 10% might be better. 1/24/2007 11:28:00 AM |

Although this doesn't really apply here, it is a work out thread so i figured i'd try my luck. How many days a week can you do push ups? I know you're supposed to rest your muscles the day after you work out, but does that count if you're only doing push ups and about 15 curls with a 25lb weight? Thats doesn't seem like a lot, but it has made me a lot more tone by doing those two things. I normally do that about 4 or 5 times a week, some of those times clearly being back to back. Should I back off and only do that when I can guarantee a day in between to rest?
thanks 1/24/2007 7:36:31 PM |

^push ups every hour on the hour seems to work well for getting military enlistees into shape. combined with a running/jogging plan, that's a good way to cut fat and strengthen muscle. 1/24/2007 8:23:02 PM |
