Actually, I do love them. They are easy as hell to fix.
Anyway, so I get the usual symptoms on my truck, which has a honkin' big ass Nippondenso starter. And of course, I live out in the middle of no-fucking-where, and nobody around here sells such things as Denso contacts.
After 4 days of grabbing the positive post on the battery with jumper cables, I think "what the hell" and take the backing plate off the solenoid. Turns out I have PLENTY of contact left (previous owner had the starter rebuilt). Also turns out that the starter contacts are covered in oil...yes, the crankcase vent exits the block just above the fucking starter.
So I gave 'em a good cleaning with me beloved brake cleaner, polished the plunger up with some 400 grit, and threw it back together. Success. I'm kicking myself for not having done it earlier. 1/23/2007 10:53:16 PM |

And it's now sitting on a piece of cardboard. Motherfucker started to turn and then quit today. I wish I could afford to buy the parts for it or get a reman one, but I blew it all on that tranny. So now I've resorted to niggering it up and hoping to get another 30k miles out of it. 1/24/2007 9:42:39 PM |

with that 4 spd you don't need a starter. just park it on a hill every time 1/24/2007 9:53:02 PM |

flatland too. it makes it more challenging. I bet that dodge would be hard to push, jump in, cram it in gear and pop the clutch. I did that with a 68 ford pickup in roseboro one time when it jumped time on the way to raleigh and didn't want to turn over. not easy to do. 1/24/2007 10:17:32 PM |

So I take the damn starter off, clean all the contacts (which look pretty good). One was worn a hair more than the other (the battery cable one always wears faster), so I dressed them both with a flat file and swapped 'em. Put it all back together, and CLICK! Nothing. Bein' that it's night, I happened to see the positive battery cable (which is niggered all up) sparking at the terminal.
I happened to have an extra heavy duty terminal in the toolbox so I cleaned everything up and put the new terminal on. Cranks like a charm, and I froze my ass off doing a lot more work than I cared to do. Dammit. 1/25/2007 12:04:42 AM |
