optmus...Hopefully some of the more experienced 4 wheelers will chime in if I'm wrong, but I don't think it's safe to hook up like that. If that's the type of shackle I'm thinking of it is super strong as long as you're pulling with the pin perpendicular to the strap, but if it gets turned sideways it will bend apart and fire through the windshield, tailgate, etc of whatever is towing you. Several people have been killed by hooking tow straps together using those shackles as a coupler. They just don't have any strength if they turn sideways...The pin shears off, the shackle bends out, and it fires like a rocket.

I'm really not trying to be a dick here. Just trying to point out something that you might have overlooked.

^you're correct. you do want to make sure it is turned the right way before you start pulling. that's one reason most of them have that shape though, to make straps slide to the correct spot if they get turned.

the only issue i see with that picture is it hooked to the safety chain hook. i've never really been a fan of that, i always slide the strap loop into the hitch then a hitch pin through it.
