I'd go get the filter from the dealer but you can get oil from autozone. 5w-40 synthetic only. I think. The process is really easy. Ramps or Oil pump. The oil filter sits in plain view in the engine bay.

[Edited on January 25, 2007 at 2:12 PM. Reason : i am trying to minimize investment..including tools needed]

2x4's = not safe
ramps = safer

tools: socket/wrench whatever size your oil drain plug is. maybe a filter wrench if you can't get your current oil filter off

Use 2x4's if you want to die. lol. You can get them from autozone or walmart under 30 bucks IIRC. The drain plug is hex/allen wrench fitment. If you check that link I posted it tells you everything thats needed.

ramp it is....

has anyone bought from or does autozone/advanced auto sell the oil filters (or similar brand) and do they normally come with the two washers?

i'd hate to drive all the way up to leith on capital or performance in chapel hill

i think i will do this tomorrow!

^They do sell filters but the mann filters from the dealer are a little bit better. The one you get from the dealer comes with everything you need: rubber ring, washer, and replacement washer for drainage plug. The others go on filter housing screw. The others don't. I've had friends buy them from there and pep boys. Filters are about 12 dollars IIRC or if you buy in bulk online you save a little.

that damn filter cap is a bitch to remove, on my car at least. As for filter, I got mine at carquest. Changing oil on a BMW is relatively easy task, once you get the filter cap to open.
