There are a couple of things you can do if your opponent has you in a Thai clinch. One thing to do is move and keep moving so that you're never directly in front of your opponent, but rather to his side or at least at an angle to him so that he can't lend knee strikes. You can also go for a takedown, single leg or double leg. Another thing I saw Rio Chonan do against his fight with Anderson Silva (who is well known for his Thai Clinch, especially after his fight with Rich Franklin) is get his knees under his torso and just push with his legs and back to power out of the clinch. Once he was able to straighten his back he quickly (while Silva still had his hands away from his torso) landed a knee to Silva's body, then followed it with a takedown. Bas Ruten explained that this was the textbook way to defend the Thai clinch, including the knee/takedown combo, since after Silva took a clean knee to the stomach, he wasn't thinking about Chonan's next move and how he was gonna defend it.1/26/2007 4:42:16 PM |

"Sean Salmon update
by Dave Meltzer
Dave@wrestlingobserver.com
"UFC officials reported after tonight's Ultimate Fight Night show in Hollywood, FL, that Sean Salmon was okay.
Salmon suffered a devastating knockout from a kick to the head by Rashad Evans in the main event of the show.
It was a scary looking situation, as Salmon didn't move for approximately seven minutes in the ring, nor as he was carried out on a stretcher. They went off the air without acknowledging the extent of the knockout. Evans, in his post-match interview, only indicated being uncomfortable that Salmon was down and not moving. They never shot near where Salmon was, so the television viewers would not have known the seriousness of the situation.
He was rushed to a local hospital where it was reported that he was conscious and talking, and seemed to be fine." " |
By the way, I've got two things to say
1) I am bummed about Spencer Fisher losing so badly. How the fuck did such a good striker let such a wild loopy punch connect clean with his forehead?! Oh well, I hope Spener can come back from that loss and still fight for the title some day, or even hold the LW title. 2) WTF was up with Jake O'Brien vs Heath Herring? Herring is a veteral who's been fighting since 97 and holds wins over some of the best heavyweights in the world. How did he let some young punk who's only been fighting for a year and a half and can't do anything but wrestle dominate him like that. Speaking of O'Brien not being able to do anything but wrestle, he had side control, mount, and back control over and over again throughout the fight. Why didn't he finish? Bottom line: that fight bored the shit out of me, and the fact that Heath Herring lost in an upset to a green and boring up and comer takes the wind out of the sails of UFC's HW division.

maybe pride aint what we thought it was
MAYBE
I love heath herring's bullshit excuse about it not being a wrestling match
how about coming to fight in shape and with a skill set greater than a wrestler, obrien may not have done much but how can you fault him?
herring looked like shit andhes not gonn beat a goddamn soul in the UFC with that crap
that was absolute horseshit, heath herring has no excuse except that he sucked on this night and it had nothing to do with it "not being a wrestling match" 1/26/2007 7:48:53 PM |

Can someone explain this sport to me. I like it, but I do not know what a triangle is, I do not know what considers one the victor, I don't know how new this is and I don't know who has an amazing fighting style. I just hope this is not fake like WWE. Are the rules similar to regular wrestling? I have been watching some old stuff.
I just know I like it when they fight with their lower extremities. What are the different kicking styles?

good questions
hm itll take a concerted effort to really discuss this, and frankly im eatin...lol
but suffice it to say that this is real combat, different organizations/governing bodies/judges have different standards for victory
the basic gist is that it is based on a point sytem in the US. Striking and Grappling are the primary influences on the victor (lands you the most points)...and then which fightr presses the action more followed by the fighter who controls the center of the fighting area/where the fight takes place (ring control)
im glad you like the use of leg kicks, im a big fan of them glad to see you enjoy the sport
yes this is an old old sport, but its evolved so much from continent to continent...and currently the sport is nothing like it was even 5 years ago
a triangle choke is when you have the opponent's head and an arm locked in a leg lock, you apply downward force to the head with your hands to submit them

I like the triangle choke...I am watching it at the moment and it was so nice how this one guy got out of a few holds and was giving full extension punches to his opponents face after being down the whole match.
I wish I could fight like this without getting busted up. Is there a girl's division of the UFC? I don't know if I like the kneeing to the chest, doesn't seems as effective, but then again I am not getting kneed to the chest

haha thats what hes known for, lol
that fight was stopped by the doctor....but i dont think i needed to tell you that..."the fighter's safety is our top priority"
other organizations have female MMA, u missed a great one this past saturday on showtime, the UFC president said hell never have womens mma in his organization, but there are plenty orgs that do
knees to the chest..lets just say...that they are effective...really effective
