I'm curious as to how much insurance goes up if you make a claim on insurance that doesn't involve any police citations or anything but damage to the car itself...

I was on a private road and slid into a tree... damage is pretty bad to the rear passenger quarter panel(busted rear window and a bent axle)... I live in MD and my insurance is already $800/6months, the dealership at first glance said $8k for full repair... I'm considering paying it out of pocket b/c I can pretty much afford to and from what I've heard my insurance would triple if I make a claim like this... ($4800x3 >> $8K 1x) I won't get an official estimate until monday or tuesday when the body shop opens up...

anybody had experience with something along these lines? if so what was the claim amount and what was the effect to your rates?

I don't have any pictures...

According to this chart it looks like it would go up about 65% if you were in NC. That is based on you getting 3 insurance points. http://www.ncdoi.com/consumer/consumer_publications/automobile/safe%20driver%20incentive%20plan.pdf

I doubt I'd pay $8k out of pocket. If anything, get them to fix the car, sell it, buy a cheap beater and drop your collision/comprehensive coverage so you aren't getting raped by insurance premiums.

I'd sell the car... but I'd probably loose the $8k on the car...

I've only had it since halloween and even though I only have a 36month loan I haven't paid it down to value yet(still paying tax/tag/title/100k extended coverage)... so then selling a wrecked RSX-S I wouldn't get much for it even though it only has 7600miles on it... so the delta would be HUGE... about $9k

and THEN I'd have to buy another car ($3kish) increasing the delta again to about $12k

so having insurance fix it and then paying the increased premiums makes more sense than getting out of this car... doubling I'm fine with, 65% increase would be great problem is I have mutual which I would get dropped from, so my base rate would go up too and THEN my rate would go up whatever percentage.

they didn't total it... although the estimate was well over half the value of the car and it will probably increase as they start working on it

its going to be in the body shop for 6 %)*(&$ weeks... they called for 48hours body work and then 19hours painting...

definitely went through the insurance company we'll see what it does to my rates...

don't give a crap about how much its going to cost me, me and my passenger walked away without even bruises... so I just don't care (although definitely in the process of an expensive lesson...)

dont know how it is in MD and all insurance companies are different, but i have made 2 claims to my insurance that didnt involve and police citations or damage other than to my car and the only thing i lost was my good driver discount.... my insurance barely went up, granted both my claims combined didnt come close to the amount of damage you have though

you should just call your agent and ask, they will know how it will change
