Trials of Atlantis killed that game, and I never felt like starting a new character on the Classic realms, otherwise if I could get some friends to play i would much rather play DAoC then WoW

DAOC is awesome and is one of the classics of PVP.

It's awesome you still play, I wish more games were like it these days.

i played it for a month or two. id rank it as the worst i played. it just wasnt as engaging as eq and not as fun as wow. shadowbane...well i dont know how to rank it, but at least you could lvl chars fast and try various things (and i like the pvp alright despite it being unbalanced).

I miss UO

That game will forever hold a place in my heart, and is still my standard of comparison for other MMOs

I used to have a top lvl void mage (respecced to aoe after they refused to fix bolts) and a lurikeen nightshade (forever gimped because of the stat caps that made them as fast as everyone else and weaker than everyone else)

I remember a friend of mine being really excited about playing it right when it first came out.

He got stuck in a table within the first 5 minutes.

What was unbalanced about the PVP in Shadowbane? I'd argue Shadowbane was pretty much the peak of PVP goodness in MMORPGs

when i played, classes werent balanced. i dont wanna hear that bs ppl are bound to spew about finding new ways to play to counter some specific class. too easy to gimp yourself, was kinda lame like that.

that said, i did do the most pvp'ing in that game compared to other mmo's, but it was hard when everyone would ally themselves and you'd have 1 tiny guild that would start stuff. we got yelled at for killing someone we had an "alliance" with via someone else (an ally of an ally, wow). fuck them, killed um anyways.

I agree for the most part. I'd say the peak was either the first few months of Shadowbane, or when factions were first released in UO.

yeah i had it from like month 2-4. wasnt bad, just not as engaging as some of the other ones. was nice to be able to lvl a few chars quickly and easy to get nice stuff, but the repair costs were lame and walking took forever.

[Edited on January 31, 2007 at 9:47 AM. Reason : and not enough higher lvl places to lvl]

I played AC1, on darktide for about 6 months like it was my job. Ive never seen a PvP system in any game come close to replicating the sheer amount of fucked you could get by other players. WoW is a complete joke.

I didn't play AC so I can't comment.

But PVP in Shadowbane just got better and better. Classes WERE balanced, people just didn't figure out viable character builds for some classes for a while. Naturally this wasn't due to brilliant design -- it was a fluke more than anything.

There were probably hundreds of viable, distinct character builds in that game. The PVP got better and better over time -- eventually you started to have 10-man group builds, where the individual templates were worthless outside of the context of working together as a larger unit. Shit was intense, I've never seen more organized, more skilled group tactics in any game.

I never got above 12 on darktide mainly because it was reroll after reroll

but I tell you, those were some of the most memorable and awesome experiences in a game for me, even though we were getting raped constantly

^^ shrug, guess i got in a smidge too early or on a bad server. honestly i prefer pve because of the gayness of ppl in general, but shadowbane was fun overall (just not what i was looking for).

Yeah I hear you, man.

There were so many surprising, cool templates in that game. I had a template I only ever got one other person to believe (except for the people I owned, that is).

A rogue assassin with low dex (lowest dex you could get, in fact). Nobody believed it'd work (doesn't sound viable), but it was nasty.
