Okay, I inherited this truck from my dad. It was his and he drove it until he died in February of 2004. However, my mom drove it for about 6 months after that, but then decided to just let it sit there and quit driving/cranking it. It upset me that she just let it sit there, so, after bitching for a long time (as in since she quit driving it), tonight, she pretty much gave it to me and said if I could get it fixed, then I could have it.

Here is what I know about the truck:
- the master cylinder needed to be replaced before my dad died. He died before he could get it done.
- Before my mom quit driving it, it started knocking off like it wasn't getting gas while you were driving it...as in, you would give it gas and it would sputter out
-the break pads were new in 2003
-the tires will most definitely have to be replaced
-I'm pretty sure it's not going to crank - I haven't tested this theory, but it's kinda obvious
- The body is beginning to slightly rust, mostly in the truckbed

So, what I would like to know is if this is even worth my time. This truck is really important to me, but I don't have lots and lots of money to put into it. I was thinking of getting the engine rebuilt, but would that help? As far as the rust goes, would getting it sanded and putting a liner in the truckbed help? If I did get the engine rebuilt, tires replaced, liner put in...how much money are we talking about? If someone could give me exactly what I need to do and how much it costs, that would help. Any advice would really be appreciated, as I know little about trucks.

if the truck hasnt been cranked in several years, i'd suggest draining the gas tank and putting some new fuel in there.. before you try to start it...

^lol, gg

it sounds like your only real motivation here is for sentimental value. in alot of cases to keep a dead relatives beloved vehicle running, etc. money isn't the issue. don't know if that's the case or not here.

even in perfect condition, the truck just isn't worth enough financially speaking to justify putting much money into it after paying someone to do the work. i definitely wouldn't screw with engine rebuilds or anything, you're getting into 4 figures when you start doing that sort of thing.

i think your best bet would be to get someone qualified on here to come out and take a look at it for you and get an estimate on what it needs. in tires alone, you're looking at ~300 bucks. truck probably isn't worth but about that as it is, maybe 1k in it's best condition.

okay, I guess I didn't specify how much I was willing to put into it. I wont put over 2000 in it, but I'm willing to put that much. I know it's not worth that much, but the sentiment is worth that much to me. It was my grandmother's truck and then she left it to my dad and now I have it. I would like to at least get it running. If it takes time to get the rest done, that's fine. Anybody have any estimates on what it would take to just get it running?

okay, that's basically what i was getting at. 2k should be more than enough to get it running very well and maybe even enough left over for a cheap paint job or something.

you really need to have a professional or at least someone who knows what they're doing to look at it. i wouldnt even begin to hazard a guess of an estimate with the vague motor issue. it doesn't sound like an internal mechnical problem, but it could be. in which case you;re looking at alot more $$. the other problems you mentioned are fairly minor to deal with.
