So I presume the answer, but I'm wanting verification from you guys

Is there specific software within the XBox 360 that requires the use of the $100 "wireless usb attachment" for xbox 360?

whats to stop me from just buying a non xbox brand adaptor for much cheaper? i could see microsoft making it solely proprietary, but seeing as how it's just basically a glorified PC, it should work right?



lets go ahead and assume basic network compatibility (a/b/g, Ghz, etc)

I don't know if other USB wireless adapters will work with the 360, but there are other, free alternatives if you have a PC or Laptop with a wireless card fairly close by.

You might be able to bridge the connections or use ICS (internet conn. sharing) to get it working. Search the internet about these two options. It may be a cheaper way of doing this.

ive heard reports of it working and not working. what you CAN do is use the old original xbox wireless adapter. it works and you likely can find it much cheaper than a new 360 one.

^^Well I'd rather not go through the trouble of making it a requirement that the PC be nearby, simply for future use applications

I mean I can come up off $100 bucks if it is the only thing that works, but I would rather just have the thumbdrive looking USB adaptor anyways sticking out the back usb port because there would be no extra wire like on the XBox proprietary version

see but it doesnt sell anywhere for SIGNIFICANTLY less (i.e. eBay) to where it would compel me to go get the xbox adaptor vs. the "proper" 360 adaptor..i guess for some people the $20-30 is worth the savings, but its not a compelling enough price point for me

i was looking for the thumbdrive usb adaptor, for the lack of wire between plug-in and antenna, and the price

I've been thinking of using ICS through the ethernet port, and sharing either a wireless or 3g signal.
Would I have to have a hub? Would I have to run any nat software on my computer?
I'm good with networking, just haven't played around with this stuff.

I have seen used XBOX360 wireless adapters for as cheap as $60. My friend got a knock off brand one and returned it because it kept fucking up.

You cannot use a USB wireless adapter with the XBox 360. You need a wireless ethernet bridge. Any kind will work, but they're stupid expensive compared to the USB adapters.

^5 I am using ICS on my laptop ethernet port to get my 360 on xbox live. It works fine so far. As far as the NAT restrictions, yes I have a small problem with that. I can't connect to my brother online even when all our settings are the same. my NAT restrictions are "normal," so says my 360, but every time we try to play Call of Duty 2 together we get a "couldn't join the game". Note that we have had live problems at our house, so it may be a problem on his end. but as far as joining games online, no problems.

isn't there a free alternative to xbox live allowing you to play others sans cost?
I haven't got my xbox hooked up to internet yet so I'm ages slow when it comes to this.

Look into DD-WRT and bridge mode.

Its how i did it, and with a WRT54G, it gave me 4 network ports at the TV/Entertainment center. Tivo, XBOX360, XBOX, all happy.
