my mouse keeps dying at no specified interval - completely random. have to unplug the usb connector and plug it back in to reset it.

the red optical light on the bottom is still on so it's still receiving power, but it just won't move anywhere on the screen. keyboard and all other USB devices continue to work fine.

it's a wired mx500. windows xp. problem has survived restarts.

what could be some possible causes?

just happened again like 20 seconds after this post. switched to an ms intellimouse for now. we'll see if it still happens.

time to buy an mx500 and return the old one in its box

my Mx518 was having troubles staying on
I opened it, and right where the cord enters the mouse it makes an immediate 90 degree bend. This had formed a good crease after maybe a year of use (I'm rough on my mice). I pulled some extra cord into the mouse, straitened the kink and it works fine

may or may not have been your issue, as I think mine occasionally just cut off
