In a 97 Corolla, is the power steering belt seperate from the timing belt / everything else?

I was driving today and I heard some noise like a bag was caught under my car for about 5 seconds. Then my power steering went out. I opened up the hood and there is a gear missing a belt.

Is it ok to drive?

yes and yes- depending on what else the PS belt drives. if its just the PS then its good. if its PS and water pump, your car will overheat quickly. if its PS and alt it will eventually kill the battery.

assuming you have the 1.8l corolla dx here

this is the belt youll need

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Water-Pump-to-PS-Serpentine-Belt-84-97-COROLLA-CELICA_W0QQitemZ320080701933QQihZ011QQcategoryZ38656QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Its $15 at any advance auto parts store.

and you will be safe to drive the vehicle without worry of overheating or battery problems.

see you could have told us that in the beginning. how did you not think thats a pertinent detail?

so scratch what i said earlier, you can drive it but youre battery will eventually die

I made it to advanced auto parts! bought my belt, then found out I need to loosen a lock and an adjustment bolt, to lower the alternator, so the belt will go on.

got out my wrenches and can't even reach the lock or the adjustment bolt and everywhere is closed. guess I'll go to Meineke tomorrow

thanks for the advice tho everybody
