Not to defend Mencia or anything because I'm indifferent to him for the most part... But most comics do borrow each other's material and put their own spin on it and change the delivery. Most comedy is recycled.

Even when I had cable I didn't watch Carlos Mencia's stuff much. He just never clicked with me for some reason. But I had no idea he was constantly stealing other people's material. And if the author is to be believed, I had no idea that Dennis Leary also stole material at one point (and he's had some pretty funny stuff!).

I guess it never would have occurred to me since I don't look out for news in the comedy business, but it seems like people stealing other folks' material has become a considerable problem.

While that clip is pretty damning (especially with that Ari guy's joke), a lot of comedians' material overlap. Joe Rogan has a bit about blowjobs that sounds awfully similar in some parts to Chris Rock's bit about blowjobs. And for awhile it seemed like jokes about StarBucks were everywhere.

In the other thread in chit chat, there's an audio file about Dane Cook's comedy, but the two examples in there don't equate to stealing in my opinion. They could've easily just came up with the bit separately.

ive always liked some of carlos mencias jokes. but his delivery has always been horrible. hes like a skitzo 13 yr old girl on crack. or something. he needs to calm down. his over the top delivery/gestures are straight up obnoxious and annoying. good to know my hate for him is validated since the jokes he tells arent even his.

ive also always failed to see dane cooks comedy as comedic. good to know hes a phony as well.

I think that mencia's stealing is a lot more blatant. While Dane did talk about the same things as CK did, he did do the joke differently. I think that Carlos is just stealing word for word.

But then again i have read that most comics start out using stolen material in their bits. Shit is hard to write. Most comedy specials arent even written entirely by the comic, but usually the comic and another person or two.

Now, I know this isn’t coming from Mitzi, because I had just talked to her an hour before, so I’m assuming it’s her sons that have made the decision to have Carlos there and keep me out. Mitzi’s health hasn’t been well over the last years, and slowly her sons have assumed the role of taking over the club. Whether the decision is financial, because they can sell a ton of tickets with Carlos, or whether it’s personal, because Pauly and I have never really liked each other, either way, it is what it is. It’s also indicative of this massive problem we have in the comedy community in general. Here you have a club that basically sells other people’s art. They put the chairs there, sell the drinks and turn the mic on, and the artists do the rest. You have a situation where a comic that’s been known for stealing other people material gets called out onstage, exposed, and then the video is put on the internet for all to see, and their reaction is to ban the guy that exposed him and made the video. To the thief, they sit back quietly and profit from his crime. It’s truly fucking mind blowing. There’s not another art form in the world where the creative rights of the artist get as little respect. If they banned the both of us for this incident, then I would understand that they're just trying to avoid conflict, but the fact that they have told me to "take a break" but they have him onstage this weekend is just a tremendous slap in the face to me, and to the art of stand up comedy. The first thing I did when I got the call, is to phone my friend Rita over at the Improv in Hollywood and ask if I could get on there this weekend. She bent over backwards to accommodate me, and gave me spots for Thursday night at 10, Friday at 8:30, and Saturday at 10. To her, and Joel over there, I say thank you very much. At one point and time it was a mob run nightclub owned by Bugsy Segal, and the building radiates this weird energy from the years of performers, criminals, customers and experiences. It’s an energy vortex, and a magnet for crazies. That was one of the best things about filming my reality show there, it was just guaranteed that you would get nutty people to talk to there. They’re just drawn to the place, like moths to a light bulb. The problem is, Mitzi was always the one that kept the place together. She’s the one with the true love of stand up comedy. She created it, she nurtured it, and she supported the art form. As she fades, so does the essence of the club. For me at least, this decision by whoever is in charge over there now to have me “take a break” is the last sign I needed to see that the end is nigh. It’s been a great time, but like all great times it must eventually end. I think the way it ended, with a video seen by millions of people is just about a perfect way to go. It’s almost fitting that I get banned from there, because it makes no sense. Nothing about the comedy store has ever made sense. That was always a part of the beauty of the place. Yes you'll get some stealing or borrowing or whatever you wanna call it between comedians, but the point is that Carlos hasn't come up with ANYTHING on his own. Actually, it's not even about that necessarily, it's that he doesn't come up with anything on his own AND doesn't give credit to the comedians that came up with the stuff in the first place. It'd be one thing if his whole act consisted of jokes that weren't his own but he at least acknowledged who came up with them first, but he doesn't do that. He blatantly rips off everything and everyone and then tries to lie about it.

I can't even pretend to know what it's like since I'm not a comedian, but yeah it would seem to me that coming up with your own original shit is very hard these days. Sometimes you just happen to come to the same conclusions as another comedian, while most of the time it's just tempting to look at what's currently hot/popular and then follow. But "Carlos" takes that to a whole new level. Not only has he come up with nothing of his own and lied about it, he's gotten practically the entire entertainment industry to believe the lie, or at the very least just play along. He lies about being a Mexican so that he has an excuse to make racist Mexican jokes without fear of retribution from the pc crowd, and on top of that Comedy Central gives him his own show!

You've all seen the video. The evidence is there. "Carlos" was called out and finally tangled up in his own web of lies. Joe Rogan did what other comedians are fully aware that needs to be done but are too afraid of what will happen to them. I'm reluctant to call it a "conspiracy of silence," but Comedy Central and all the other corporations that back Carlos would probably be screwed if they admit that they fucked up and that Carlos wasn't even worth a sketch show. It's like a house of cards; they've become so tangled up in the lie that is Carlos Mencia that if they tell the truth now, it's all gonna come crashing down.

Okay, it's probably not nearly that bad. People will probably still pay to see Carlos regardless, so as long as he keeps getting tickets sold what the hell do the producers care how he gets his material or if his delivery blows?
