Yo garage folks,

Time to share your ideas and waste time searching for things for other people. I need your help finding a car for my little bro. He's about to finish high school and is a prospective NCSU student (waiting for reply from Admissions office). My parents want to get him a reliable daily driver. But, he wants something sort of cool. I've searched around on autotrader and found a few civic's, 240's, and celicas. Any other ideas?

Budget: $3,000

You should be able to find a late-80's 300ZX for around $3000--probably not what your parents had in mind, but it's definitely cooler than a Civic

300's will require a good bit of maintanence for that price, and it is very hard to find a decent mileage, good condition, unmodified 240 for that price sadly.

4wd Jeep Cherokee (Early 90's)

Jeeps are cheap as shit. If it has a complete maintenance record, you could rely on it pretty well.

Then again, you could get TOTALLY FUCKED like I did with my first jeep. So... Choose carefully... D:

^ This is also good advice.

Remember that many people here just suggest the very same cars that they drive.

Not that I'm calling myself out or anything.

go with a honda civic or accord....everyone has one but they are safe and cheap to fix for the most part. he can always upgrade when he gets older

Hurley posting here, imho, latest year-model of accord possible. Ive heard of some 98ish 4-door accords going for around $3000 (probably one of those deals you only run across once in a lifetime... my dad missed out on a $300 98 accord that only needed a brake job). those things get pretty good gas mileage too. if not accord, id say civic.

^ shouldn't be any problem. As long as he doesn't go all ricer ape crazy on it. Otherwise, it should pass with flying colors, right?

What about this one?

if the budge is only $3k, I'm guessing the parents won't be shelling out loads of cash for repairs and the likes. maybe a celica? personally I'd say just get a mazda protoge/honda civic and deal with it until he can buy his own wheels

good price for what it is:
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/car/277174275.html

needs some work, tho... and worse fuel efficiency than a civic

^^ del-sol
e30 would need some work but it would have 10x the soul of anything else mentioned
mkIII supra might be cool.

old golf gti would be neat.
early 240sx wouldn't be bad either.

if soul doesn't matter though... go w/ the civic

Funny you mention, I have one sitting at home. I can't convince my parents to fix it, because it would probably take more than $3,000 to fix it. Needs new engine (seized), new brakes, new suspension, new tires, and probably anything that needs to be done to a car that's been sitting in a back yard untouched for over 2.5 years.

'91 e30 318is -> $3,500. Lots of mods, need advice from some of you beemer owners.

Give me honest an opinion on daily drivability and reliability. I see you've modded it a little also. PM me.

94-95 Miata... convertible, can park anywhere, good gas mileage, reliable even if you beat on it every time you drive it, chicks dig it, parts are cheap

limited cargo space and not the best thing to tangle with an 18-wheeler in
