If I was to change the timing chain and whatever needs to be done with that, what am I looking at spending?

Possibly do the clutch as well.

Anywhere specific to go for good prices and quality work?

Are the timing chains bad??

To replace both (upper and lower) it lists 13.5 hours labor, not a simple task. At $70 an hour, thats a LOT of money. Hell youre probably looking at least $150 in parts for that job, and I mean just for the chains. This isnt a normal maintenance item either, not like timing belts on other cars, why are you asking about it??

Is the clutch bad?

why would you swap out the chain?

In 10 years and 145k miles the only timing chain related work my family's vr6 needed was a new tensioner/plastic guide

it has 116k miles on it and a couple mechanics told me that there was noise coming from it.

in that case, get yourself a second (or third) opinion from say, a VW tech. someone who knows whats up. the tensioner could be bad allowing excessive play in the the chain, which causes noise when the chain slaps something. it could just need a tensioner like ^^ did.

an old co-worker of mine had about a 2000 or so f-150 with a timing chain. He always let the ford dealership do the maintenance on it. At about 110,000 his engine failed because of the damn plastic tensioner guide. He was depending on Ford to tell him what maintenance he needed, and ended up buying a new engine.

most of the times on the VR6 its more of a matter of the stupid plastic guide or the tensioner than the chain breaking, but since youll be in there tearing everything else out you might as well do the chain, t-stat, crack pipe(get a good billet one that wont ever give up on you), and if you want to do the clutch youll already have the trans pulled so its all right there.


as for a good place to get it all done, id say call Blackforest and schedule something with them and like evyerone else said, its not going to be cheap. you can look up parts prices online to get an idea then factor in around $70 and hour or so for the labor.

thanks for the input guys...what happens is at 2000 rpm, i can hear the chain. right now it is running, but I am not driving it.
what is that mechanic shop on hillsborough street called, right beside packbackers? there are two of them.

i know a guy that'll do it for yah.. he's done this several times...

it's not a simple job by any means, but you definitely dont want that thing to let go..
