I have a Carolina fan that is convinced that UNC football is in all aspects better than State. Statistics, records, National reputation.

I mean I feel like im arguing with a brick wall, this dude is convinced Carolina is perfect in every way.

State has a better bowl record (We actually have a winning bowl record)

State also has more ACC championships (7 vs. 5). We have more championships overall (Southern Conference, ACC, South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association, etc)

Random non sports fans knowing what UNC's logo looks like does not equal national reputation in football.

People who are college football fans and care about football in the south will know that UNC is terrible at football.

i love state but you gotta realize that unc owns us overall... its not even close

i'd say we are perceived as better in recent years, but unc hands us our asses quite often (although i hate admiting it)

also i did research on the NFL and they have significantly more players in the NFL, and ones that play - but you could argue we have better NFL talent

Well they have consistently beat us for several years now. We couldn't even beat a 1-9 UNC team.

I've also met up with some people out west and when the subject of schools come up it was always "oh, that baby blue team that is really good at basketball." Face it, neither UNC or NCSU has any recognition in football these days. You'd probably have to be ranked... consistently before that would happen. The only claim to fame any school with "North Carolina" as part of their name has is UNC and it's all due to basketball.

So the bottom line is that you can't measure success between the schools game for game or head to head because there have been many advantages in UNC's favor:

1) UNC was around 100+ years before NCSU

2) In every state in the union (with exception of a few) the Ag/Engineering school gets less funding than the University of______ that state

3) NCSU spent the money it DID have on things like academics....especially with the huge expansion after WW2 (war veterans)

Conclusion: As of this decade, NC State definately has way more street cred than UNC because of the likes of PRIV, Williams, Torry Holt, etc....

tit for tat, NCSU has done far better than UNC in using its resources (fewer of them) historically and remaining competitive.

And as far as the "people don't know us" argument goes....it all depends on who you're asking. I've been to California, Texas, Chicago, Canada, DC, Cleveland, etc... and I haven't found one person who didn't know something about NC State...if anything they always tell me about Jimmy V, that coach with funny shoes/oakleys (amato) or P Rivers....

Um, UNC does own us in football, they are like 63-27 with a few ties overall, or something very close to that. Not only that, you can't even find a 15 year era in which we are on top I don't think, I know we won 5 straight 1988-1992 of which I was at all 5, and then UNC ran off 7 straight. If we were 63-27 (with a few ties) against a team overall and they claimed to be better than us in football half of the people on this board would have a stroke. It's kind of a pain to see us acting like South Carolina fans over Clemson, acting like they are better than Clemson when Clemson holds a better than 2:1 ratio in the overall W-L.

in the 4 glorious years of priv we had respectable teams, which is more recently than carolina can say the same.

bringing out the overall record and having that be the end of it would be fine if carolina people didn't in the same breath say that we're not a storied basketball program b/c we haven't done anything lately.

UNC's facilities are just fine, ours might have a slight edge, but the Kenan football center isn't exactly a junkyard, and have you toured both facilites to make such a judgment????
UNC is a basketball school no doubt, but in 97 they had a pretty good environment, and were you at the Clemson game last year at Carter Finley Stadium....when teams are good, fans show up and support the team, when the team is bad, fans don't show up and are negative if they do show, true of any sport of any team with a few minor exceptions, which NCSU and UNC don't qualify.

also, if you look at the records, I think UNC absolutely beat the fuck out of us for the first 20 years or so. We were absolute garbage as a football program before the 50's or 60's and thats pretty much why we hired Case to make us a basketball powerhouse. We couldnt compete with d00k or unc in football so we went the basketball route.


Since then, its been pretty even except for a few long winning streaks by UNC in recent years, but there have been a few 10 years stretches where we got the better of them.



^I agree with everything except I'd say that State fans are much better at showing up when we suck asshole. I know attendance will go down, but we'll consistently put more people in the stands when we're losing than comparable programs when they're going 3-9

We are famous for playing like a middle school football team vs. UNC (not saying that UNC is playing well either). I literally turned off the TV last year when it was fumble every other down. I would not base anything of our program on those joke ass games.
