the first second of some mp3 files doesn't play on my computer. The file is good I know, because it plays just fine on my mp3 player. I've got the most recent audio driver. any ideas?

what program are you using to play the file?

Have you tried using a different program?

When asking for help in solving a problem, you need to provide as much information as possible. In this case, it would help to know the operating system, application in question, when it started happening, and what might be the distinction for the mp3s that are having this problem compared with those that do not have the problem.

okay

I'm running windows XP pro.

This occurs in every player on the PC including, Windows Media Player, Zune, Nero Showtime.

It has happened ever ince I built this machine a few months ago, but didn't really bug me until recently.

As far as I can tell there is no difference between the mp3's that work and those that do not. Perhaps the ones that are working have 1 second of dead air before they play.

I'm running an ASUS mainboard (can't remember model number off hand) socket AM2, Athlon, Gig of Ram, blahblahblah.

Also other sounds are sometimes cut off at the beginning, or if they are short don't play at all. For example, when you deal the cards in free-cell, only the tail end of the shuffle sound is heard.

I am using my surround sound system as my speakers, with an optical connection.

Hope this is enough info for some help.

sounds like a sound card issue.... in something like winamp does the little equalizer thing move for the first second like it should but just no sound or?

is the 1st second of audio really righ or low pitched? Or low volume? if you use different speakers for your MP3 player and your computer, you might just not be hearing it perhaps because of the use of different speakers

[Edited on February 21, 2007 at 8:44 AM. Reason : add "because of the use of different speakers"]

maybe your speakers go into immediate standby after every sound?

try some headphones on the same output and see what happens

thanks for the input folks. it's onboard sound, but one of the reasons I got this mobo was for the optical audio output. the equalizer doesn't move. I'll try different speakers and a different output.

your reason: onboard audio

i bet it won't do it w/ add-in audio card.
