The Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress is one of the handiest but most anonymous aspects of the federal government. Every year, CRS puts together hundreds of in-depth non-partisan reports for Congress. The reports, which cover everything under the sun, undoubtedly make our federal representatives look much smarter than they really are.
Recent titles include:
* Excessive CEO Pay * China-U.S. Relations * Housing Issues in the 110th Congress * Overview of Filipino Veterans' Benefits
Handy, indeed. But as the Washington Post points out today, CRS reports are not considered public information, despite the fact that taxpayers foot the research group's $100 million annual budget.
Some members of Congress, perhaps worried about being perceived as less than omniscient or giving voters a sneak peek at a policy decision (oh no!), have even countered efforts to make CRS reports public. Most notably, the Post cites our old friend Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), a fellow who once defined the Internet as a "series of tubes." 27B had some fun with that." |
So, is there a reason for these to be kept from the public eyes (terrorism, security) or is this just the government trying to keep the public from knowing bad things about the government?2/19/2007 6:52:22 PM |
