i just purchased a new laptop on friday and already got the dreaded blue screen tonight. it is running system recovery right now, but is this a sign that there is more trouble to come and i should return the laptop for another one?

Well it shouldn't blue-screen out of the box. If it does it again you can try and argue for an exchange. They might tell you to go honor your warranty through the manufacturer though (and leave you without a computer for 3 months as you send it out, get it sent back, send it out, over and over).

^signed.

whoever you bought it from should have a return policy that extends at least somewhat past 4 days. politely refuse to take anything less than a full exchange on the spot.
