another springtime coming up, another optmusprimer boat thread

I am seriously thinking of buying a boat this year, but dont know a lot about boating. Or boats. Currently a friend has a Yamaha dual engine jet boat FS and he wants to make me a deal on it. Shouldnt this be a fairly reliable boat?

The jet pumps are about the simplest drives out there. Had a friend with one. lotsa big block fun. Check out "hotboat" online forums for a good education.

it is my experience that jet skis and boats are money pits, and you are combining them!

On the other hand, they are so much fun its almost worth it.

for just goofin off around the lake they are not bad.....def not the most fuel efficient and not very good platforms to ski or wakeboard off of....not very good in rough water either...the boats have very little deadrise in the back

Lack of pulling torque out of hole shots when pulling a person (tube/wakeboard/skiier...)

it will do it, but I"ve been pulled behind a 200hp jet boat and countless props(75hp-350hp) and the jet boat took a significant amount more effort than ANY prop... this was a single event but I've heard other people say similiar things

^ 200 hp jet boat is about the equivalent of a 130hp prop in thrust.
not to mention it was probably tiny and didn't want to come on plane w/ a skier.
the ones i've been in were quite the opposite. they tried to jerk your friggin arms out of socket.

Pro:
accelerate like a bat outta hell
shallow
& if its a trimable pump you can throw one hell of a rooster tail.

Con:
inefficient as hell.

watch out on the yahamas, the oil injection lines come from the factory installed stretched to the limit, and held in place with a wire tie instead of hose clamp. Over time they will slip off the nipple, and bye bye engine.

^it's easy enough to get rid of the oil injection and just run premix.

some of the yamaha oil injections also have a bad habit of fouling plugs when you cold start them.

My uncle has a jet drive. it's great when you're navigating a shallow or rocky area. the main draw back is the cost and the fact that they have about 10% less thrust power than a standard motor of the same rating.

Besides.. driving a boat is like driving a car with no brakes/gas peddal... I stand up on that thing like I own the lake!

Yeah, step it up a notch, to 56 mph, and wipeout. Makes for some nice busted ribs where they can't even get you back in the boat without nearly passing out.

try 73mph. water gets pretty damn hard. i've been tossed at 55+ a number of times, it sucks.

probably my worst was jumping a ferry wake, losing it and flying into the air, then coming back down perpendicular on the waverunner. nice bloody lip, nose, etc. from the footwell.

I was on my jet ski when my buddy flipped it at about 45-50, and let me tell you... we skipped across the water hitting each other and stuff, just some brusies though.

I would def reccomend a Yamaha though. I've had my XL760 for quite a few years now, and the only prob ive had was the fuel level bobber thing, but that doesnt suprise me considering how much i throw it around. Most rental places have Yamahas for some reasons: relialibility, easy, sit higher in water.

I've wiped out at near double that...on a airport runway. I shall not divuldge the particulars for fear of incriminating myself.

one of my buddies bought this last summer:

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/boat/products/modelspecs/352/0/specs.aspx

had one problem towards the end of the summer where the throttle was stuck in reverse after we pulled up to shore. But it after playing with nozzle a little it came free and we didn't have any more problems with it. We also sucked a tow rope up into the intake one afternoon.

My biggest complaint was that the steering is pretty unresponsive at slow speeds when your trying to not make a wake. But at speed, that thing will turn on a dime.

But I think the biggest reason he went with a jet drive is cause he has young kids and that way he doesn't have to worry about them getting hurt on the prop when they are out of the boat.

that's my experience too

that's because steering is controlled by the water output from the drive.

^i realize that, I was just saying that because it doesn't occur to a lot of people that a jet boat would turn any different than one with a prop.

That's what I'm screamin'! They make some mighty fine outboards, at least from my experience with bigger boats.

Not sure what that other dude was talking about.

^all the four stroke yamahas are bulletproof....the only bad outboard yamaha made were the 250 and 300 hpdi....everything else they make is awesome....my dads boat is gonna have twin f225s on it...(i dont think i can convince him to get the new f350s on the back of it)
