if tiger died tomorrow, espn would consider him the best ever because they are a bunch of douches....I, however, wouldnt. Jack Nicklaus is the greatest golfer of all time. He played against far superior talent and came up the winner many times. Even if Woods passes the majors record Jack has, ill still feel a bit uneasy calling Woods the best, only cause he played against crap competition.

As of right now it looks like Tiger clearly has #2 greatest player of all time on lock, i just cant call him the best of all time yet

that's a good point, the competition is weak. Or is Tiger really that much better that the competition just looks weak? And the courses have changed with the "Tiger proofing". Of course you could argue the extra length of the courses gives Woods an advantage.

its hard to say, who knows if the guys back in the 50s, 60s, 70s could smash the balls too with the clubs tiger has, a lot of these guys used actual "woods" instead of metal drivers

thats why its so hard to compare players in any sport from years ago to today, equipment changes, training changes, courses/rules change, player size changes...its almost impossible, but it does bring up good debate, and definitely opinions

i stand by mine, however, in that tiger is #2. a lot of jacks's competition was always around him in the end. Today, Tigers wins have been follwed by random people in 2nd, 3rd place all the time...i believe today's competition is that much weaker than the competition Jack had to deal with

In fact Jack, Arnie, and a lot of the old time greats also say that he is the best ever. But I will agree that it is not apples to apples when comparing era's. We can only have our opinions.....

Yes, there are a couple more "legendary" names from the 60's and 70's than there are now, but Ernie, Vijay, Phil, Retief, DLIII, Duval (few years ago), Furyk, etc... have all won their fair share of tournaments.

^^That's true, the amount of people that play golf has increased substantially over the past 50 years, due to an increase in courses and the resulting price decrease. Thus, the talent out there now is greater than ever, due to the greater available talent pool. Pros were beating the shit out of each other for years (really since Nicklaus) and no one until Tiger was consistently dominant. This shows how good the guy really is.
