well, a good day at the range after a few months of cold nasty weather and i have re-thunk my club selection.
ive got a: Driver 3-wood 3-hybrid 5-hybrid 6-9 iron P,G,S,60degree Wedges putter
got rid of my 5 wood because my 3 hybrid pretty much replaces it (plus it was a ladies club). my only prob is my iron set.
so ive got 4, 5 if you count 9 iron, wedges.
but maybe ill keep them all in the bag. its just too crowded.
degrees: 8=37degree 9=41degrees P=45degree G=50degree S=55degree 60degree 2/27/2007 5:24:08 PM |

get rid of the gap or the 60. You dont need both.
Personally I would get rid of the 60. that club gets used the least and you can always open up your sand wedge.

if you can hit a two iron more than 180 yards and more than 20 feet off the ground you must be very talented

Plus, how often in a round do you actually hit your 2 iron? Much more often I hit a shot that needs a 52 or a 60 degree shot b/c you're either a long hitter that hits wedges into a green or a short knocker who needs more wedges to play around the greens he/she cant reach in 2 shots. 2/27/2007 7:25:03 PM |

Yea I could usually hit it around 220 off the ground and upwards of 240 off the tee. I like to use it when its windy or playing a course that has a good amount of roll.
but thats when I used to play a good amount. Now-a-days I rarely use it cause my game has gone to crap. FUcking grad school.

Depends on the course.
As far as wedges are concerned. I have a lob wedge but I dont really use it either. I can range my pitching wedge anywhere from 70-130 yards depending on the shot I need/want. I used to have this gnarly wedge shot with the pw. Anywhere around 100 yards, I would hit this low flying ball that would stick like crazy once it hit the green.
Different strokes for different folks.

Anyone putt with a 2 ball putter? I bought a White Steel last summer after putting with a Scotty Cameron newport 2 for about 6 years. I still use both depending on where I'm playing and how I'm putting.
I feel like the 2 ball helps you keep from being so mechanical and lets you putt by feel a lot better. I've noticed I make more long putts with this putter, but I also miss some of the easier ones I would usually make with my titleist.
Not a good putter to use on fast greens IMO.

The sumo is dick. It jumps off the face, but it sounds so hollow that you think the face is cracked or something. However, if you don't care about anything but distance then I guess the sumo is for you. 2/28/2007 12:42:27 AM |

I had a 2-ball for a couple of years, and liked it...but when I started messing around with the little mallet putter like Mickelson uses, I loved the light weight and this sounds weird, but it almost feels like I can steer a putt with that little face and little blade, as opposed to a wrecking ball, although straight, Odyssey 2-Ball.
Check out the White Hot XG #9

Well I didn't realize it was that much of an accomplishment, but thanks! I use my 2-iron more than any other single iron in my bag (with the exception of the wedges) because I'll tee off with it several times a round (depending on the course). I usually take it 225-230 off the tee, so it's useful to have when I want to avoid trouble far down the fairway.2/28/2007 1:10:43 PM |

Hitting an iron off the tee is just smart, but the difference between a 2 iron and a 3 iron off the tee isnt that great. If the hole is short enough to hit an iron, the 3 should be good enough. In general, 2 irons are not smart clubs to have in your bag. 5 woods are more acceptable if you're not going with more wedges. Hell, not many pro's cary 2 irons anymore...and if they do, then its usually the loft of our 3 iron anyway. Tiger carries one, but I guarantee that its a 3 iron compared to most clubs built today. I also dont think he carries a "gap" wedge b/c his PW is probably 52 degrees...like my gap wedge.
I dont know when it started, but club manufacturers started making clubs like this so people would think they were getting more distance, and now its just accepted that a PW is 48 degrees. Nobody had to carry a "gap" wedge until 10 years ago. Interesting stuff. 2/28/2007 1:52:57 PM |

i was pointing out the fact that 99% of golfers aren't good enough to use a 3 or 4 iron affectively much less a 2 iron. i carried a 2 iron for 3 years but only used it off the tee primarily but i added another wedge and took that out of the bag now i have:
driver 4-wood 3-pw 52, 55, 59 wedges 2-ball
i feel like i gained a lot by adding a wedge and dropping a club i liked to use off the tee sometimes 2/28/2007 1:53:35 PM |

I'd agree with that. Maybe not 99%, but certainly a large fraction. I'm a fairly low-handicapper though (used to be a 3, now probably like a 7) , and I like my long irons. I've perfected the stinging low 2-iron out of the trees. Can't do that with a 5-wood 2/28/2007 4:22:21 PM |
