"(3/9/07) The forty million or so emails I got from Wolfpack country this week were correct -- I was an idiot for not having NC State on the NIT bubble. Their huge OT upset over Duke in the Acc tourney was enough to jump them from off the radar into the last at large slot. Quite similarly, California found their way in after their upset of UCLA in the Pac 10 tourney, while Saint Louis's upset of Umass in the A10 tourney bought them a spot for the time being -- both of those games also went to OT. "

This was before the UVA game tonight, so we're looking even better should the magic run out between now and sunday.

as an acc team, shouldnt we automatically be at least bubble for nit if we are .500??

remember the field shrinks from 40 to 32 teams this year so they have to be a bit more selective

.500 at what? we were 5-11 in conference...that is not good enough for NIT, especially with how many people who are going to just miss the NCAA's this year.

that said...am i really gonna have to watch the NIT now if we don't win out?

ah yea

and it is run by the ncaa now, so i heard they may not be about the $ thing which is apparently why acc teams were more likely to get in and host

but still

our schedule was probably better than most of the other "bubble" teams

[Edited on March 9, 2007 at 10:15 PM. Reason : ^did you just start watching bball this year? i obviously meant overall]

"obviously" i was referring to regular season...but since we're talking about overall record to include conference tourney...then i guess Wake should be getting an NIT nod too then right

if they win tonight, who knows...

if they lose, they won't be .500

i might drop my argument if someone would answer my question

i would answer it myself, but i dont know where to look

all i'm saying is when teams are selected for both NCAA and NIT tournaments, all their games are taken into consideration, not just regular season

for example in 2002-2003 our football team was 11-3...that includes the Notre Dame bowl game even though we were 10-3 regular season

even though thats football and this is basketball

if we win the acc tourney, we WILL be 9-11 in the conference...more conference wins than duke!!

i'm pretty sure if you find some archived stats online of past conference standings all the teams will have more than 16 total games played

but maybe some stat places use them, some dont

right but that was irrelevant to the discussion we were having, we were arguing state's merits BEFORE the tourney

and conference tourney games def count towards the overall record in the eyes of the nit

and i am probably stupid, i looked at the early to mid-90's and there were def over .500 acc teams that didnt make the NIT and then i stopped looking b/c i was beginning to feel dumb.

but it may have been true in the last 10 years or so, but i dont want to look b/c i feel dumb enough

So with the NCAA making the NIT selections, if we are looking at a 5-7 seed in the NIT, we are playing them all on the road most likely? I was really hoping that if we did end up in the NIT, at least we would get another home game or two.

Sheeeit, if we even get a chance to go one and done in the NCAA, then that means we
WON THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 20 YEARS to get to that point.

That by itself would be a dream come true.....

Regular season conference champions get automatic bids to the NIT now if they lose their conference tournament and miss the NCAA Tournament.

Well actually, the more regular season conference champs that win their tournament, the more NIT bids available for us. In the Horizon League, Butler was already in the NCAA, but with Wright State winning (who tied for the regular season with Butler), it opened up one more NIT slot.

We're at least in the NIT, so this is kind of trivial, but, Wright St doesn't help or hurt. Wright St was going to the NIT, now they are going to the NCAAs. A team that was going to the NCAAs got bumped to the NIT by Wright St. delta NIT spots = 0

There are some low-major conference championship games where it does matter, because those conferences will get no at-large bids to the NCAA or NIT tournament. If the regular-season champ wins the conference tournament, the league takes 1 NCAA bid and no NIT bids. But if someone else wins their tournament, they get an NCAA bid and an NIT bid.

For that reason, we want the following regular-season champs to win, to help open up NIT bubble slots:
Mississippi Valley St. (SWAC, vs. Jackson State)
Delaware St. (MEAC, vs. Florida A&M, RBC Center @ 6:00)
Long Beach St. (Big West, vs. Cal Poly)
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Southland, vs. Northwestern State)

Also, we want George Washington (which is assured of post-season play) to beat Rhode Island (which is going nowhere unless they win today) in the Atlantic-10 final to preserve a spot. For the same reason, we want Akron to beat Miami of Ohio in MAC championship.

If we lose today, and several of those six go the wrong way, we could still be out of the NIT.

The emphasis this year is on post season play. We are definitely a lock for the NIT. If we keep up our Cardiac Pack run, we could go dancing.

Why did they shrink the NIT field to 32?

There are more teams in D-1 every year...
