it's for a 99 camry - i just want a 1/8" input near the dash somewhere - can be a cable sticking out somewhere but concealed for the most part so i can hook up an mp3 player and have it be within my reach. i assume this would be cheaper than getting one of those newer cd panels installed with an aux input on it or an mp3 cd player 3/12/2007 12:11:42 AM |

rofl, you number one won't be able to find a stand alone aux input...and even if you could there is no existing way for it to get to your speakers. If you want an aux input pony up the money for the cd player and install it, easy. 3/12/2007 2:40:36 AM |

You can get an fm modulator installed that will give you a 1/8th.
Or you can buy one of them trasnmitter gismoz for about 30..Dont get the cheapest on avaiable, and dont get the one with a long wire. 3/12/2007 6:26:22 AM |

wired fm modulator. $150 installed. That will get you a 1/8" cable to come out from where ever you want it. 3/12/2007 11:33:31 AM |

you could get a toyota factory stereo aux kit, about $130 plus installation. it turns your CD changer input into RCA. from rca to headphone jeack is a 5 dolla radio shack cable. wired fm modulators are easy, but sound quality deteriorates and unless you hide them they look ugly (except possibly for some ipod cradle models that look halfway decent). you can get a new headunit for cheaper then 100 dollars for a brand name with an aux input these days. plus probably another $12-25 for an install kit.

i'm sure installing a new head unit is easy for people who have done it before but i really don't want to mess up the dash and have it be useless for a while
the wired fm modulator is really what i was looking for - any cheap place to get one installed or someone on here that could do it for cheap? 3/12/2007 1:59:48 PM |

i have one laying around i could sell you it aint pretty but it works ill look around for it
nvmnd found it its not wired but it is 12v powered. i remember it pising me off all the time because instead of four or five preset frequencies it had a dial-style selector.
with a wired one you would need to take out the headunit anyhow so why not upgrade to a better HU
there are ton of people on here that could do the swap for you BTW. some of them can even do it without fucking anything up

i know absolutely nothing about head units but it seems the factory one is much bigger than something you would buy at circuit city or best buy.
would the new head unit fit the same slot as the factory one and be easily installed with no "empty space" - i've seen people's cars with ghetto empty space where you can see straight through the panel into the car becuase the new head unit is much smaller than what was there before 3/12/2007 2:55:25 PM |

you would either get a double-din aftermarket unit or get a regular single-din unit and an intallation kit taht wil make half of the big hole into a small storage compartment. it will look somethiong like this obviously the new unit goes into the opening.
[Edited on March 12, 2007 at 5:08 PM. Reason : ^^thats a clean conversion too but ipod only. the aux jack ones ive seen are $100+]3/12/2007 5:06:44 PM |

If your 99 camry has a button on the factory radio for "CD Changer" or "XM Radio" then you sould be able to find an after market device that is wired in through the plug that is left where the "CD Changer" or "XM Radio" should have been plugged in from the factory. Some people have attempted to pin out the spare plug in the back of the factory radio to find the two wires to make a mini headphone jack(try a google search on it). You will just push the CD Changer button to switch to the AUX input(IPOD,MP3, etc.) and then control what you listen to through your MP3 player
Without the "CD Changer" or "XM Radio" plug in the back of the factory radio you are stuck with the FM modulator In this case I would just replace the whole radio and get something like a pioneer with an existing AUX input for around $100.00
1st way(not done the way I would do it)http://www.mattgilbert.net/carstereoauxinput/ 2nd way(pretty easy but kinda pricey)http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/TOYOTA_AUX_INPUT_ADAPTER_199820035_LARGE_MOLEX_CHANGER_PLUG_p_635.html 3rd way(decent if you know what your doing and cheap)http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=78577
Hope this helps.... 3/12/2007 8:59:32 PM |

Does that actually work, just switch over the CD changer? On my audi, the head unit expected to get a data stream from the cd changer. If after a few seconds it didn't get the info it wanted, it would switch back over to the head unit. Blitzsafe made a unit for my ride for like $180 at the time, so I spent a couple weeks reverse engineering the data stream and created a circuit to do it for me for about $10 in parts. Though, this tactic isn't exactly for everyone 3/12/2007 9:29:11 PM |

i really don't care what the solution is - i just want crisp (no FM transmitters) sound for $150-$175 including labor and whatever parts are needed.
anyone interested? 3/12/2007 11:05:24 PM |
