Have you ever been to the R&R Hall of Fame? It's a joke. Once I got there, I was actually embarrassed that I had wanted to go so badly.
The Sex Pistols didn't go to the ceremony for a reason.
There's no Patti Smith without the Ronettes, that's for damn sure. 3/12/2007 1:31:34 PM |

Until they induct KISS, the R&R HOF has zero cred. Regardless of how you might feel about them on a personal level, the facts are that they were the biggest band of the 70s, they have more gold records than anyone (I think, def. top 2), and their influence is felt far and wide through bands that have come after them. Do they overhype? sure. Is gene simmons all about money? yes. Will they slap their logo on anything not nailed down and try to sell it? yep. None of that changes the fact that they are the most exciting live act in the history of rock and roll. 3/12/2007 1:36:28 PM |

They are most certainly not the most exciting live act in the history of rock music. Top 10? Sure. The first to go pure fire and flash for their theatrics? Absolutely. Still, they've never provided the devastating crush of sound that it takes to push a live CONCERT over the top. 3/12/2007 1:40:48 PM |

^Eddie is in rehab, Dave is not going in protest because the producers of the program would not let him perform without Eddie and Alex there as well. Velvet Revolver will induct them and perform VH songs.
The ceremony will be on VH1 Classic tonight starting at 8:30.

they have MORE cred for NOT inducting kiss. i can't believe how shitty of a band they were. everyone knows this. they should get inducted into the "we have no musical talents, but we put on a great pyro show hall of fame."
k, i read the rest of your post. i agree. let them in on their showmanship and marketing. that is a part of r&r afterall, and they were the greatest at it.

There are thousands of bands with plenty of great songs. Kiss is not a bad band, but they're not even close to being one of the greatest bands in rock history. 3/13/2007 9:13:30 PM |

one of the greatest 'impacts' in rock n' roll history. Let's say that. I'd say they'd crack top 25 at the top....no problem.
I'm not going to obviously strut out their [songwriting] up to test with let's say the stones, who , gn'r, clash, floyd - those dinosaur levels. I mean, during their prime they belted some pretty quality tunes though. At least 3-4 great records (destroyer, kiss, dressed to kill, love gun, alive 1 and 2)
But they had a shiteload of successful singles that warrant them on the list, and their tours were mega epic. 14 something platinum records, more gold records than Gene Simmons butt hair, and rock n' roll icons to boot.
Let's see...
Deuce Strutter Rock n' Roll all nite Shout it out loud detroit rock city love gun christine sixteen hard luck woman (this song is still so awesome) beth fuckin GOD OF THUNDER i was made for lovin you (lol)
there might be more...pretty much their exact same setlist since forever. lol. I mena you can poke fun at them sure but leave them out of the R/R hall of fame? WTF, come on.. 3/13/2007 9:33:31 PM |

Look, I liked REM til about 94 when MONSTER dropped (with a fuckin thud) and Stipe became a big arrogant fucker and their music went to shit. It hasn't recovered since.
They kept up that mockery for so long it made me sort of hate them. Sorry. I did like some of their classic records though. 3/13/2007 9:38:48 PM |

thats kinda my argument when it comes to KISS. Don't get me wrong, I am a diehard KISS fan and I have been my entire life. But how can you justify putting a RAP group in the ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame before putting one of the most influential bands in history in? And if you doubt that statement, watch any documentary on any band from about 1980 on, or read interviews, etc. They all cite KISS as an influence. Their songs are generally simple straightforward R&R (no different from an AC/DC). They had an impact so far beyond music it isn't even funny! KISS changed everything.
(REM is awesome too. Their performance last night was easily the highlight!)

ATTN: WHITE PEOPLE
BLACK PEOPLE INVENTED ROCK 'N' ROLL
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS LATER, THEY DID IT AGAIN WHEN THEY INVENTED RAP
SO GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE WITH YOUR "KISS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN RAP" BULLSHIT

I dont know.
love em or hate em, KISS is a rock and roll icon.
when i was in 4th grade, i thought they were awesome. by high school, i realized that they actually sucked. now i wouldnt spend the time it takes to click a free download of any one of their songs.
but "hall of fame" doesnt necessarily mean "most critically acclaimed songwriting"
if KISS was anything, they were all about "fame". so put 'em in there. then stick them in the "circus acts" corner.
wtf is anyone worried about? its not like people even really go to Cleveland to see the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame anyhow. 3/14/2007 2:35:48 AM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
I went to Cleveland to go there. Granted, I was already in Ohio, but we did drive an extra 90 minutes each way to go.
It's just a worthless piece of shit place, and it's overpriced, too. The building is pretty from the outside, and there are a few neat artifacts, but it's mostly crap. Chuck Berry is relegated to one corner of one room at the ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame, for christ's sake. There's far too much emphasis put on the Woodstock generation (and Hendrix in particular, not that I don't love Hendrix), and not nearly enough put on music made after 1985. It's like someone wrote a textbook on "the rock and roll generation" and built a museum around it.
To their credit, an entire floor is dedicated to rap, but it was closed when I was there so I can't speak to its quality. The fact remains that the coolest thing I saw there was a picture of Bo Diddley cooking chicken backstage just before a set; he's got a little piece of meat in one hand, a stirring spoon in the other, and his guitar already slung around his neck. It's a perfect photo. 3/14/2007 4:11:03 AM |

rap does not equal rock and roll. I love (old school) rap music, but I wouldn't put it in a R&R HOF. Just like I wouldn't put Opera singers in there. If they want to change it to the MUSIC HOF, then induct any and everyone.
and black people didn't "invent" rock and roll. They did invent rhythm and blues, but I would argue that it was a combination of black and white music of the time that became what we call R&R.
You know, the main point is that the R&R HOF is a stupid thing. It really shouldn't even exist. 3/14/2007 7:33:31 AM |

While I agree that certain aspects of white folk musics were incorporated into the genesis of rock and roll, to say that black people invented rhythm and blues instead of rock and roll is incredibly fucking stupid. "Rhythm and blues" was a term used to keep black artists away from white radio. Period. It's the same fucking music. 3/14/2007 1:29:05 PM |
xplosivo All American 1966 Posts user info edit post |
You are an idiot if you think that black rhythm and blues, esp. as it was at the time, is the sole genesis of rock and roll. There were many white artists at the time doing rhythm music, not to mention up tempo country music. These sounds are what melded to form rock and roll. Rock and roll is probably the most NON RACIAL form of music there is. It is a combination of some of the best aspects of all sorts of music.
did black artists get played on the radio? Not as much as they should have. But that has nothing to do with my argument. 3/14/2007 1:48:24 PM |
